Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle marks few and fairly light.

Cat Number: TPSA 7504.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 140 grams. More typical of a first issue that are often 20 to 30 grams heavier than the EMI rim repressings.

Rarity: Moderate: but first issues are more elusive and this includes a superb original lyric insert. For a first pressing, this appears very little played.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Hardly an album that needs much introduction, it’s simply one of the most famous and best of the ‘popular’ heavy albums of the early 70s. All seven tracks included will be known to most collectors and of course includes the classic ‘Smoke on the Water’ with possibly the most famous rock guitar riff ever recorded. This evergreen track is based on the infamous burning down of a Swiss venue where Frank Zappa and the Mothers were playing at the time [this famous gig can be heard on the officially issued bootleg Swiss Cheese Fire as featured in the Beat The Boots CD (and vinyl) set issued by Zappa himself. Also featuring the most famous and best ever Deep Purple line-up of Gillan, Glover, Paice, Lord and Blackmore, this too is arguably their best ever studio album – Machine Head is a true classic in the true sense of the word. This is a very fine copy and a first press record – a rarer factory sample too, laminated cover, lyric insert sheet and offering wonderful sound quality. Heavy rock albums via vinyl are unbeatable and this more than proves that beyond any dispute. Get this on to your deck and rock the night away – dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a gatefold format, laminated both sides. Printed and made in Great Britain by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. The front picture may appear to have marks, but let me assure quickly, this is the cover’s artwork design and nothing to do with wear or blemishes. This includes the original large lyric insert sheet.

Lamination – Front and Back: The laminate retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity, any friction rubs or dulling barely even registering even under light. A few, mainly fine edge creases, the most noticeable on the top front right corner. With near total adhesion and barely a crease to be seen away from the edges, this famous cover sets a high overall standard.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This early printed version has the laminate ends on the inside bottom edges. These often stick together badly when closed causing major pulling to the artwork near their ends. This has been largely avoided with any traces being small and faint. Both sides again in super conditions with little wear at all.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four edges in splendid and barely worn condition with full laminate coverage. All smooth to the fingertip and unpeeled and straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear and no feathering or trimming. Record is stored on the back edge. The front is tucked and folded so with a black end edge which makes this far neater than later-made examples.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine: clean, straight with minimal traces of compression. Unusually, retaining full laminate cover and this has barely cracked from opening with no peeling – this is seldom avoided, often seen devoid of laminate at all. Folded square with neat edge alignment. All text is fully present and totally unworn under the very solid, clear laminate.

Corners: Barely any wear to the spine ends and only small rubs to the tips on a couple opposite. I have mentioned the moderate corner crease above already. These corners retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this famous early 70’s cover, one that will prove quite difficult to find much better. This splendid item should please many collectors.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): with little to fault. Again G&L printed, very clean with solid folds and just one mild corner crease. Rarely seen a better one, this being fresh and totally unworn or aged to any degree.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): this a solid plain white unlined inner that has aged little Clean and hardly creased at all with all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): a couple of fine surface marks on side one that have no sound, any others are very small and faint and this record appears very modestly played. Very clean with fine shine and a rich black finish. Wide grooves for ultimate sound quality, this takes the stylus almost on to the label before the music areas end. One to please many, if not most collectors wanting a first edition copy of this rock classic.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rock masterwork plays even above it’s excellent visual grading with little to fault. Powerful and strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is highly impressive with a wide dynamic range and very rich sound with amazing dynamics and detail. Barely any surface sounds on the music areas, a trace at the very beginning is very brief and practically lost in the volume of the music) and no pops or noteworthy clicks were noted and this very early pressed copy sets a high standard. A couple of three ultra faint ticks were just noted on ‘Never Before’ from a small mark, but this is almost ear-to-speaker-cloth faint and brief. How many records this great age will not have the odd tiny blemish or two, let’s be real. A record that offers immense power, richness and depth and most importantly, that classic heavy vinyl sound that classic rock music demands. This super detailed recording has real clout, pace and rhythm and no other format really compares to the original vinyl when found at or near it’s best. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played modestly and has been generally well stored and looked after, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this genuine rock classic. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

End Piece: Even though I know every track like the back of my hand, I can always enjoy hearing a great vinyl copy of this one. This was Deep Purple at their very best, a band at their creative peak following the great Fireball, In Rock and the brilliant double live set Made in Japan, recorded around this time too. Could any rock collection be taken seriously without this one? This is a terrific record and copy and can be played at great volume with high confidence of clean sound. Dah, dah, dahhh – dah dah dah-dahhh - dah dah dah-dah-dahhh, seldom sounded much better to these ears.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
