Label Conditions: Both immaculate, exactly as made: ultra attractive, clean and fresh examples. Spindle marks? What spindle marks? - there are none, this record had never been played and can pass for new. This is best copy of this rock classic I have ever seen or heard.

A Special Note About This Copy: This is a rare version of this record that was unique to the German market and pressing. Firstly, the cover is very different to the UK version in-as-much the front is a totally different colour (please see my main picture). Also the record is stored from within the inside of the gatefold via the centre hinge fold area - like ‘The Beatles for Sale’, I always use this album as reference as most collectors will know it well. Not only that, this German ‘Hor Zu’ pressing is of classical quality and I have never heard a better sound example of this album ever. So many ‘standard’ Harvest copies crackle and disappoint but this is immaculate and plays, as it should, like an unplayed brand new record. Quite heavily pressed with details and dynamics I swear are lacking on the UK copies, this was a real eye-opener and simply blew me away. The stereo imagery and class locked into these unplayed grooves all these years simply cried to be released and the sonic power of the music was a real revelation. German classical pressings have been well-documented and known for many years but when a rock album is pressed to same standard, its a thing of rare beauty. With the best sound possible and a unique cover in supreme condition, this is a copy for the audiophile and Deep Purple connoisseur. It will not be seen often and never like this, do not lose this one.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 136 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Original Year of Release: 1970

Matrix Nos: SHZE 288 A-1 / SHZE 288 B-1. These are pressed up against the label rim and not that easy to see but very present nonetheless.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new recipe worked perfectly. In Rock fast became one of the heavy rock classics of all time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here though is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel to channel pyrotechnics and speed – a true classic for sure. Selling well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a lowly 143 in the US) this album has to be one of the very best issued on this famous progressive label. Often seen, but rarely as this ‘alternative’ German pressing with its unique and very different looking cover – the track listing is the same. This copy is a beauty with both record and cover in immaculate condition. The original owner kept his records inside ultra soft Japanese anti-static inners and the Hor Zu inner is NOT included. A connoisseur’s copy, this will prove very difficult to match or ever find better.

Cover Grade and Format: Mint(-) a gatefold format with single thickness front. Laminated front and back and with unique front cover artwork. Printed in Germany.

Lamination: Front & Back: Superb laminate that is very clear, shiny and fresh, all fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. The back top has a faint trace of dulling when angled viewed but little else anywhere else and this unusual cover looks fantastic. Any marks are very few and any present are ultra fine and barely even show. The lack of creasing is more great news especially on a front face that is very thin and delicate - a bit like Traffic’s UK debut, ‘Mr Fantasy’ format. A lovely variation for the specialist collector, this is so hard to find in the UK and even more so, outside Europe.

Cover Inner Gatefold: All looks great again with any traces of ageing or blemishes being minuscule. As stated above, the record enters this cover via the centre inside which again is unique to this unusual variant. This being the case and having a heavy record inside all these years, to find this delicate spine hinge area undamaged or worn is highly unusual and significant.

Top Edges: Both immaculate, practically as made.

Bottom Edges: Barely any traces of wear, a tiny chip on the back right corner tip and any thickening to the delicate front edge is small and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering. Record enters inside as mentioned already. The right back edge is fully sealed and laminate wraps around it.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine allowing for minor laminate movement due to opening. Solid and square with no compression, folded squarely so both right edges meet up flush and parallel. Barely any trace of wear, all text is perfect and unworn on the jet black, solidly laminated and uncracked spine.

Corners: Chip bottom right back as mentioned already, little wear elsewhere and all retain excellent shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A fantastic all round example of this classic early 70’s cover variant, one that will prove very difficult to find significantly better. This has clearly been little handled and it’s one time has forgotten. It will please most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) and the cleanest best looking copy of this title I have seen for ages. A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy that shows nothing more than ultra fine surface traces under light, the tiny types that just catch light when the angle is just right. This supreme German pressed record is pure quality and that will be very evident to any new owner when first seen and has been pressed to the highest of standards. Visually a super record that should please all collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant German record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing of note to fault and I realise that is a bold statement for a record with some very quiet passages none more so than the famous beginning to ‘Child in Time’ that plays beautifully with nothing unwanted. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. Pressed to classical record standards, few UK examples will get close to this – and I have heard quite a few. I doubt if this record has seen light-of-day for decades and finding it better will prove near impossible Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. For those wanting high quality sound and something different, this copy is unmissable and it’s strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
