Label Conditions: Both clean, fresh and attractive with only very light/light and mainly faint spindle marks. The one lady owner played this one very little.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. An average or slightly above weight for its era.

Rarity: Moderate, but early-pressed examples are harder in top conditions and they rarely get much better than this.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Arguably Deep Purple’s finest and most treasured album, the one that really won them ‘mass’ appeal after a patchy start with the band performing cover versions and really going nowhere very fast. A new vocalist was introduced – Ian Gillan – and now performing their own material, a new ‘supergroup’ was born. An album of hard-edged riffs and vocals of the highest calibre – few singers could even live with the power behind him – but this new formula worked perfectly. ‘In Rock’ quickly became one of the heavy rock classics of all time and this contains several of the band’s finest anthems including the awesome ‘Child in Time’ and ‘Speed King’. My favourite song here though is the lesser mentioned final song, ‘Hard Lovin’ Man’ that simply drives and flows from the speakers with channel to channel pyrotechnics with speed and utilising the brilliant keyboards of Jon Lord to full effect – a true Purple classic for sure. Selling well, and peaking at 4 in the UK (but only a lowly 143 in the US) this album can only be enjoyed at it’s best with a very clean pressing, and this one delivers. This is not a first pressing but is still early and in fabulous condition, all the elements are superb and sound quality is immense. The one lady owner again kept this in beautiful condition but probably played this one a little more than some – but with the utmost care. Still only very lightly for sure.

Cover Grade and Format: Reluctant to grade this beauty less than Mint(-), to do so would not be doing this astonishing iconic cover full justice. It’s a gatefold format, laminated front and back (not inside). Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Included is the Harvest promotional inner.

Lamination: Front & Back: Both sides look absolutely stunning with deep rich colour artwork that is totally unyellowed and showing hardly any real wear at all. The laminate is ultra clean, clear and fresh with hardly any creasing of real note – just one fine one on the top of the back, any others are few, fine and faint. The lack of blistering and non-adhesion is a huge bonus as I always state, although this is not wear as such when present, it never looks great and when the classic covers avoid it, it’s a major plus. Special mention has to be made to the shine and lustre of both surfaces: the front is devoid of any friction rubs or dulling with mere faint traces on the back under light and the beauty of the deep, intense shine has to be seen to be fully appreciated. These surfaces gleam with an icy look of smoothness rarely seen on covers this great age. Under light, the faintest of faint trace of gripper marks can be seen in manufacture with just the odd minor surface blemish (but look hard). These are pretty common but are so faint I hardly know why I mention them, purely a nature trait of manufacture. These famous faces of one of the greatest rock acts ever will rarely be seen so beautiful again and that’s a promise.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Again stunning and the white areas as bright and clean as when made. The odd ultra faint surface crease being somewhat critical, but outstanding in all respects.

Top Edges: Both immaculate, unworn.

Bottom Edges: Pretty much the same again, ultra faint rub trace near right corner.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering, the front top has a minor burr trace to the very edge and remains untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being sealed.

Spine and Text: Mint as made and all laminate undisturbed and present witih no cracking. The ultimate perfect spine with no central crease or sunken text. Solid and square with no compression, folded squarely so both right edges meet up flush and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn on the jet black, solidly laminated and unpeeled spine. This is perfectly smooth to the fingertip text with no scuffs or grazes or cracks and the same goes for all the laminated edges.

Corners: All corners are little short of immaculate and have that just-made look with practically perfect shape and definition retained. The odd microscopic tip rub if being ultra critical.

Cover Summary: A truly wonderful all round example of this classic early 70’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. Cover-protected for most of it’s existence, this is real eye-candy for the connoisseur cover enthusiast. Only one in many thousands will retain shine and clarity quite like this. Thiswill please most-all collectors.

The Inner: The Harvest inner promoted the early bands on this famous prog label, and again it looks in supreme, barely aged condition. How many of these these days can still be said to be a true white colour? Most tone and darken, this has barely even any trace of glue darkening on the seams and the lining as solidly attached as when made. So many dry-out and fall out, not this one. No noteworthy creases and no edge splits, this again almost reminds of what they were like when issued back in the early 70s.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX++ / Mint(-), side one has a very fine small mark, little more than hairline really on ‘Child in Time’, but this is pretty much ignored. . A superb visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy clearly very lightly played and little handled. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant original record plays up to its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. An album that does have some very quiet passages but barely anything of note was heard. Fast approaching forty years old, few will be seen or heard much better than this. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The stereo imagery is fantastic especially on the final track. No pops or clicks of any note were heard, maybe just a couple of the faintest ticks possible from the tiny mark, almost head to speaker-cloth light and this gives a very fine account of itself for what remains a fairly challenging album. Few early examples will better this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, within in a non-smoking environment. Nothing at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this hard rock classic. This record will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits very high recommendation. A much better all-round copy of this evergreen classic will never be found easily.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
