DECISION '76 THEME HENRY MANCINI
VERY RARE ACETATE OF THIS LONG-LOST RECORDING COMPOSED BY HENRY MANCINI WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN AVAILABLE FOR SALE ON LP OR CD! ACETATE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH SOME WEAR. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL RECORDING WHICH NBC USED FOR 3 ELECTIONS IN 1976, 1980 AND 1984!

DECISION ’76 – THE LOST RECORDING By Pat McWilliams
The summer of 1976 saw dozens of tall ships arrive in New York harbor to celebrate the Bicentennial of American Independence. Israeli commandos reached into Idi Amin’s Uganda to strike a blow against airplane hijackers. And the Republican Party convened in Kansas City to select a candidate for that fall’s Presidential Election.
On the final evening of the convention, Ronald Reagan, passed over for the party’s nomination in favor of incumbent President Gerald R. Ford, delivered a moving concession speech. Then NBC began rolling the credits over a wide angle shot of the Kansas City skyline: zig-zag lightning sliced through the pitch black nighttime sky.
Accompanying the scene was a stirring patriotic orchestral piece entitled “Decision 76” by the great composer, Henry Mancini.
A brilliant work, “Decision 76” captured the spirit of a nation broken free from the controversies of the 1960’s, war and Watergate—a nation with two hundred good reasons to celebrate. This theme would be used by NBC-TV for several more presidential elections and was the decisive factor in my and several other music enthusiasts’ choice of NBC as our source of political news.
Alas, Henry Mancini has passed from the scene. NBC no longer uses the “Decision” theme. And, unlike the many other melodies Mancini composed for movies and TV, this one was never available for sale to the public on records or CDs.
However, it appears the music was distributed on a 7” 33 1/3 rpm record to NBC affiliated TV stations for use in conjunction with their local election coverage.
My anonymous informant, ‘Vinylman,’ says he once had a copy of this record. Unfortunately, about 6 years ago, he sent it back to NBC in exchange for a letter of thanks, rather than the $100 bill I would gladly have given him, had I known him at the time.
I have prepared an artist’s conception of what this record might look like, based on ‘Vinylman’s’ description. According to him, it has a plain label and neither Mancini’s name, nor the title appear on it.
Somewhere out there on a studio shelf, there could be one or more of these records, gathering dust. Broadcasters, NBC employees, friends or family, please take note—a lot of Mancini fans want this one—a lot!

RECORD GRADING POLICY

MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale

EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play

VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play

VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.

VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.

VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.

Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like

Fair = you are getting this record just to own but not to play

Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest

We ship all LP's in new (unused) custom LP mailers. We pack records with filler pads, placing the disc in an inner sleeve outside the cover to prevent seam splitting in transit. Part of our postage fee covers the cost of the mailer and pads (which currently costs us up to a dollar per).
