SPACE ODDITY -

This 1969 release features David Bowie's first hit single, "Space Oddity," and sets the tone for the spacey ZIGGY STARDUST to come. But other than the title track, SPACE ODDITY isn't a glam-rock album. For that phase, one must move ahead to 1970's THE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD. These folk-based tracks largely present Bowie as a surrealist singer-songwriter. The uncharacteristically bitter and sarcastic "Letter to Hermione" is the most impassioned track here, presenting, as it does, the angry side of this master of cool. While still earlier recordings are noted for their Anthony affectations, SPACE ODDITY is where the Bowie myth begins to take shape.

Tracks include: 1. Space Oddity 2. Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed 3. Don't Sit Down 4. Letter to Hermione 5. Cygnet Committee 6. Janine 7. Occasional Dream 8. Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud 9. God Knows I'm Good 10. Memory of a Free Festival

Principally recorded at Trident Studios, London, England.
Every track on ZIGGY STARDUST & THE SPIDERS FROM MARS sounds like it was pulled from the rock 'n' roll bible. The album created a mythology that reached beyond the Chuck Berry folklorisms of the everyday rocker to create a new type of rock star. With ZIGGY, Bowie created a viable alter-ego to descend onto the planet and wreak havoc on rock's fertile soil. In doing so, he created the most original rock creation since the music's inception 20 years before.
Musically, the album was as inspired as Ziggy's persona. Mick Ronson's snarling guitar evoked the triumphant power of the late '60s guitar heroes, but added a flash so dynamic fans knew why the Spiders were labelled "glitter rockers." As an album, ZIGGY STARDUST told the story of rock through the eyes of Ziggy, an alien--with a narrative that was equally sensational and intimate.
Any doubts as to Bowie's intentions to take over rock were displaced on a closer listen to "Star." At the end of the song Bowie (as Ziggy) whispers, "just watch me now," and his determination is eerily obvious. Combining skills as a mime artist and top-rate vocal dramatist, Bowie created Ziggy, the bisexual space man, who sang "songs of darkness and disgrace." The planet was dying, something made evident on the first track "Five Years," and the only way to survive was to "Hang On To Yourself."
In the end, "they had to break up the band," according to the tale told in ZIGGY STARDUST, but the inevitably tragic strains of this "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" had left their mark on the dying planet. They are still being felt today.

Editorial reviews

...David Bowie has pulled off his complex task with consummate style, with some great rock & roll...with all the wit and passion required to give it sufficient dimension and with a deep sense of humanity that regularly emerges from behind the star facade...I'd give it at least a 99.

DAVID BOWIE STATION TO STATION NUMBERED LIMITED EDITION CD/DVD BOX SET 3 180 GRAM LP'S

Rolling Stone 500 Greatest Albums of All Time - Rated 324/500!

Featured as one of the 'Records to Die For' in the February 2011 issue of Stereophile!

Numbered, Limited Edition Deluxe Box Set! Only 3500 Copies!
Includes Station To Station on 180 Gram Audiophile Vinyl pressed from the Original Analogue Masters!

The return of The Thin White Duke...' So begins David Bowie’s 10th studio album. In part influenced by his role in Nicolas Roeg’s film The Man Who Fell To Earth, ever the innovator, Bowie became the character The Thin White Duke; a composite, part his character from the film, alien Thomas Jerome Newton, part Buster Keaton and part European cabaret artist.

Touching on his love of German electronic bands, American R&B and even film music plus the talents of his American band, Bowie crafted an album drawing on both European and American sensibilities; a transition between his recent Plastic Soul period and what would become his re-acquaintance with European culture when he moved to Berlin the following year.

This Deluxe Edition of Bowie's 1976 Station To Station album contains 5 CDs, 1 DVD (Audio Only) and 3 heavyweight LPs and includes the previously unreleased & highly sought-after concert Live Nassau Coliseum '76 and so much more!

"The title track is where Bowie proclaims himself the Thin White Duke. Thin he was: Station to Station was recorded in a blizzard of cocaine in L.A. "TVC 15" is New Orleans R&B as robotic funk; "Golden Years" is James Brown from outer space, with Bowie's amazing falsetto." - www.rollingstone.com

David Bowie IN THE BEGINNINGS EARLY LP'S AND TRACKS  -

David Bowie - Double LP - Stereo and Mono MIXES

David Bowie's eponymously titled 1967 debut bears little resemblance to the music he found fame with later in his career as it's influences drew more on theater, music hall and vaudeville. Released in the same year as The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, David Bowie is a distinct reflection of mid-'60s London with whimsical narratives and biting wit, an early sound from an artist that would hang his hat on the ability to embrace and usher in change.

DAVID BOWIE THE NEXT DAY 180 GRAM 2LP & CD

180 Gram Double Vinyl Cut at Masterdisk by Alex DeTurk!
Music Icon David Bowie Releases 24th Studio Album! 17 New Songs!

David Bowie's 24th studio album, produced by long-time collaborator Tony Visconti, was announced on Bowie's 66th birthday. "Where Are We Now?" is the first single from his first album of original material in 10 years.

Working in secret, Bowie and producer Tony Visconti recorded the album over a two year period, spending about 3 months actually writing and recording the album.

In recent years, radio silence has been broken only by endless speculation, rumor and wishful thinking. A new record - who would have ever though it? Who'd have ever dreamed it? After all, David Bowie is the kind of artist who writes and performs what he wants when he wants...when he has something to say as opposed to something to sell. With "The Next Day", he definitely has something to say. Now we all know, David Bowie has been in the recording studio - just when we least expected it.

Throwing shadows and avoiding the industry treadmill is very David Bowie despite his extraordinary track record that includes album sales in excess of 130 million; not to mention his massive contributions in the area of art, fashion, style, sexual exploration, and social commentary. It goes without saying that he has sold out stadiums and broken ticket records throughout the world during this most influential of careers.

According to producer Visconti, "The material is so strong and beautiful - if people are looking for classic Bowie they'll find that on this album, but if they're looking for innovative Bowie, they'll find that on this album too. It's all there."

"This persistent, well-manicured nostalgia could account for the startling warmth that exudes from The Next Day; even when a melody sighs with an air of resigned melancholia, as it does on "Where Are We Now?," it never delves into sadness, it stays afloat in a warm, soothing bath... The Next Day neither enhances nor diminishes anything that came before, it's merely a sweet coda to a towering career." - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, www.allmusic.com, 3.5/5 Stars!!

David Bowie Earthling 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION Import LP

180 Gram Vinyl! Avant-Garde Drum & Bass Extravaganza! Featuring "Little Wonder" & "Dead Man Walking'"!

“As was the case with Miles Davis in jazz, Bowie has come not just to represent his innovations but to symbolize modern rock as an idiom in which literacy, art, fashion, style, sexual exploration and social commentary can be rolled into one.” - Rolling Stone

Bowie is the man who elevated his music to what can only be described as an art form. Driven by an entirely deeper dynamic than most pop artists, David Bowie inhabits a very special world of extraordinary sounds and endless vision. Unwilling to stay on the treadmill of rock legend and avoiding the descent into ever demeaning and decreasing circles of cliché, Bowie writes and performs what he wants, when he wants.

1996 was an extraordinarily active year even by David’s own feverish standards, switching styles and moods effortlessly, embarking on a confrontational tour around the US with Nine Inch Nails and performing acoustically with Neil Young and Pearl Jam at the Bridge Benefit Concert in San Francisco. He had a triumphant summer headlining Roskilde and the Phoenix Festival, and his electric performance at the VH-1 Fashion Awards on October 25, where he debuted his new single Little Wonder. Then there was the new album Earthling, all very direct, hard-hitting. The dramatic cover art featured David in an Alexander McQueen designed Union Jack coat in a slightly surreal British pastoral setting. The album arose out of the dynamic achieved and harnessed by the end of that summer's tour. The band working on the projects featured Gail Ann Dorsey on bass and vocals, Mike Garson on keyboards, Reeves Gabrels on guitar and synths, and Zachary Alford on drums, the nucleus of the touring outfit. The record features the avant-garde drum-n-bass extravaganza and top 20 UK hit Little Wonder and the crushing Dead Man Walking, a reflection on getting older.

"[H]is enduring enthusiasm for new musical adventures can be applauded. Earthling doesn't break any new ground, but it certainly captures the mood of contemporary popular culture — from the anguish of American industrial rock to the ecstasy of British dance music." - Mark Kemp, Rolling Stone, Rated 3.5/5 Stars

Ranked #39 - Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Artists! Ranked #23 - Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Singers!

There's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. Prior to his breakthrough in 1972, he recorded a proto-metal record and a pop/rock album, eventually redefining glam rock with his ambiguously sexy Ziggy Stardust persona. Ziggy made Bowie an international star, yet he wasn't content to continue to churn out glitter rock.

By the mid-'70s, he developed an effete, sophisticated version of Philly soul that he dubbed "plastic soul," which eventually morphed into the eerie avant-pop of 1976's Station to Station. Shortly afterward, he relocated to Berlin, where he recorded three experimental electronic albums with Brian Eno. At the dawn of the '80s, Bowie was still at the height of his powers. Even when he was out of fashion in the '80s and '90s, it was clear that Bowie was one of the most influential musicians in rock, for better and for worse. Each one of his phases in the '70s sparked a number of subgenres, including punk, new wave, goth rock, the new romantics, and electronica. Few rockers ever had such lasting impact.

"David Bowie's contribution to rock & roll has been wit and sophistication. He's smart, he's a true musician and he can really sing. He's got such a big range: I like the Ziggy Stardust voice, but he's got a lot of different voices. He's got his crooner voice, when he wants to. And he has a melodic sense that's just well above anyone else in rock & roll. Most people could not sing some of his melodies. He can really go for a high note." - Lou Reed, Rolling Stone

LIVE AT SANTA MONICA - THIS OUT OF PRINT PRESSING IS PRICELESS

With bootlegs there's often a danger of confusing rarity with quality: whispered fan legends can wither when exposed to commercial sunlight. But as the man says, the beat it comes out better on a stolen guitar, and Santa Monica '72 earns its fan reputation. This is at once a snapshot of a hungry group on terrific form, and a fascinating look at an emergent star." - Pitchfork   UK PRESSED IN HOLLAND double-LP pressing on heavyweight vinyl. In 1972, David Bowie set out on his first US tour. He'd recently introduced the world to his Ziggy Stardust persona with his top 5 album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' and had completed a hugely successful UK tour. The Santa Monica concert, David's first live US radio broadcast, was aired live on KMET in L.A. Over the last 36 years this historic recording has only been occasionally available as a bootleg. For many, ownership of this concert was regarded as a true test of being a 'proper Bowie fan'. This powerful, galvanizing show allows a more than 70 minute glimpse into the earliest nationwide live radio exposure granted David and the Spiders. The set list is compiled primarily from the 'Hunky Dory' and 'Ziggy Stardust' albums and features two covers, Jacques Brel's "My Death" and the Velvet Underground's "Waiting for the Man," alongside the awesome power of 'The Man Who Sold The World' centrepiece "The Width Of A Circle" (this version is a ten and a half minute sonic assault) and an 'Aladdin Sane' previewing "The Jean Genie." The set list is also quite different from the Ziggy terminating 'Ziggy Stardust - The Motion Picture Soundtrack. Accompanying David was The Spiders From Mars: Mick Ronson - guitar, vocals, Trevor Bolder - bass, Mick "Woody" Woodmansey - drums and Mike Garson - piano. EMI. 2008
