Very rare collaboration between former Sonic Arts Union member David Behrman with former Taj Mahal Travellers member Takehisa Kosugi & Rhys Chatham. A must!!!

Some info on the release: Very rare piece of vinyl from Us composer David Behrman released on the great Lovely Music collection (that released also records from Yasunao Tone, Jon Hassell, Meredith Monk, Blue Gene Tyranny, Eliane Radigue, Tom Johnson, Roger Reynolds, Paul Dresher, Roscoe Mitchell, William Duckworth, Annea Lockwood, Joan La Barbara, Nicolas Collins, David Rosenboom and others). This one is a rare collaboration with Takehisa Kosugi of Taj Mahal Travellers fame and NY scene member Rhys Chatham. Very difficult to find, small pressing, doesn't show often for sale.

Leapday Night and Interspecies Smalltalk are sets of compositions for instrumental performers and a computer music system which I designed and assembled during the 1980s. The system consists of pitch sensors ("ears" with which it listens to the performing musicians), various music synthesizers (some homemade), a computer graphics color video display and a personal computer.

Each composition is built upon a computer program governing interaction between performers and the system, and creates situations rather than set pieces. The performers have options rather than instructions, and the exploration of each situation as it unfolds is up to them.

Leapday Night was developed in the course of rehearsals and performances with Ben Neill and Rhys Chatham from 1983 to 1986. Interspecies Smalltalk was commissioned by John Cage and Merce Cunningham as music for the 1984 Cunningham Dance Company repertory work "Pictures," and was made for performance by Takehisa Kosugi.

A favorite slab from a founding memeber of the mills college/sonic arts union camp, who were a collective of experimental musicians active betwixt 1966-1976 consisitng of robert ashley, david behrman, alvin lucier & gordon mumma. inspired by the success that john cage and david tudor had in touring and designing their own equipment, The Sonic Arts Union toured europe and the states performing on stage together, though each contributor was performing his own work by himself. on some tours, the Union expanded to include mary ashley, shigeko kubota, mary lucier and barbara lloyd, who contributed their own works. the element uniting these individual works, according to David Behrman, was the desire to create pieces "in which established techniques were thrown away and the nature of sound was dealt with from scratch. hallelujah. Here's the man a decade later featuring the fiddling & vox talents uv none other than Takehisa Kosugi ala Taj Mahal Travelers fame & trumpet from rhys chatham & to be fair, some other fine fokes. really great for certain states of mind 

David Behrman (born Salzburg, Austria, August 16, 1937) is a US composer and the producer of Columbia Records' Music of Our Time series, which presented works by John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Henri Pousseur and other influential composers. He was also a founding member of the Sonic Arts Union together with Gordon Mumma, Ashley and Lucier. He toured with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and has worked with Ben Neill. He was a part of Robert Ashley's Music with Roots in the Aether interview series. He is known as a minimalist composer. He has been active as a composer and artist since the 1960s. Over the years he has made sound and multimedia installations for gallery spaces as well as musical compositions for performance in concerts. Most of his pieces feature flexible structures and the use of technology in personal ways; the compositions usually rely on interactive real-time relationships with imaginative performers. Behrman's sound and multimedia installations have been exhibited at the Parochialkirche in Berlin, Stanford University's LaSuen Gallery, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, The Hudson River Museum, The New York Hall of Science, the DeCordova Museum, The Addison Gallery of American Art, Ars Electronica in Linz and La Villette Science and Technology Museum in Paris, and other spaces. Some of these installations have been collaborative projects with George Lewis, Paul Demarinis, and Robert Watts.

His music has often involved interactions between live performers and computers, usually with the computer generating sounds triggered by some aspect of the live performance, usually certain pitches, but sometimes other aspects of the live sound, such as volume in QRSL (as recorded by Maggi Payne on The Extended Flute (CRI807). Many of his significant works, such as On the Other Ocean, Interspecies Small Talk, and others have been released on Lovely Music. In 1994, he was awarded a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants to Artists Award.

Condition: Vinyl and cover lie in excellent- condition. Cover has some minimal storage wear around the corners, while the vinyl looks mint except from a small scratch on side b: that doesn't sound.
