THE DANCING DID

And Did Those Feet

Original UK LP released on Kamera Records in 1982. Includes printed lyric insert.

The popular belief that British folk rock died with the last days of Fairport and Steeleye at the end of the '70s takes a damned good kicking from Dancing Did, Post Punk / Gothic madmen who looked at the directions drawn by Dexys on the one hand, Ten Pole Tudor on the other, and then drove a gap-toothed grinning juggernaut through the heart of all of them. Spectral rhythms meet manic jigs on darkened moors and misty hills, and if there's not a fiddle, bodkin, or pan pipe in sight, that's not to say their presence isn't felt. "The Wolves of Worcestershire" is almost Shakespearean in its lyrical vision, while "Squashed Things" is the sound of the Cure meets the Wurzels, and isn't the sort of song one would want to think about while driving. Martin Dormer's guitar even sounds like a lorry and Chris Houghton's drums are soft and squelchy beneath it. Occasionally Dancing Did let their post-punk origins shine through, in which case they remind one a little of Sad Lovers and Giants. But their roots are as ancient as the concepts behind "Badger Boys" and "Within the Green Green Avon-O," while the self-affirming Dancing Did is to English gypsy culture what the Pogues were to Ireland's tinkers.

Live, Dancing Did was one of the best times one could have without leaving the early '80s. On vinyl, the magic is just as potent as it ever was.

-------------------------------------------

To quote writer Mick Mercer, who regards them as his all-time favourite British group:

“The Dancing Did were also unique, not something ascribed to many bands. Like an unholy union of Punk, Folk, Rockabilly/Bebop and true English Goth imagery, you can plot them on a creative line somewhere between CS Lewis, Alan Garner, Mervyn Peake, P. G. Wodehouse and The Avengers; Pagan legends, various ghosts and Vikings invading village greens rubbing lyrical shoulders alongside nuclear war, feral wolves and burning witches. What other band could have started a song with the lyrics, ‘Take good care of your petticoats Alice, if you want to play cricket with your brother’? Hell, I’m shocked that their final gig wasn’t honoured with a Spitfire flypast, but you can’t have everything.”

PAYMENT

I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction’s end. If you want to bid on more of my auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week’s auctions.

However, I am no longer willing to carry combined transactions beyond two weeks and in these cases would appreciate payment promptly after the close of the second week’s auctions.

I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment. Unfortunately some buyers have been stretching out transactions to unacceptable lengths so I feel I have no option but to limit ‘carried over’ transactions to two weeks.
