Curtis Mayfield's Superfly is a landmark 1972 soul and funk album that served as the soundtrack for the film of the same name and is widely considered a pioneering soul concept album. It is one of the rare soundtracks to have out-grossed its accompanying film, bolstered by two million-selling Top Ten singles: "Freddie's Dead" and the title track, "Superfly".
The album reached #1 on the Billboard pop and R&B charts in 1972, holding the top spot for over a month.
Ranked 69th on Rolling Stone's "Greatest Albums of All Time," it is often described as "Marvin Gaye's What's Going On at a street level" for its socially aware lyrics about poverty and addiction.
Critical Acclaim: It received an A- rating from renowned critic Robert Christgau, who praised Mayfield's ability to transmit bleak lyrics through "uncompromisingly vivacious music".
Unique Social Perspective: Unlike the film it accompanied, which was sometimes seen as glamorizing drug culture, Mayfield’s lyrics provided a critical counter-narrative on the realities of inner-city life.
