Most Blue Note aficionados recognize the dominant trombone role played by Curtis Fuller in the development of the Blue Note Hard-Bop sound of the late 50’s through the 1960’s. His blues oriented style is immediately identified within whatever context he appears whether as a sideman with Art Blakey or as leader of Blue Note stalwarts such as Sonny Clark and Art Taylor. Curtis also developed his composer chops contributing tunes to many dates of others as well as his own.  In this early Fuller date recorded in 1957 Curtis contributes four originals and you can hear his experimental development as he makes the transition from early post bebop tunes such as “Algonquin” - with its call and response AA form - to Nita’s Waltz and then to the title tune “Bone & Bari”, which takes the AABA form (Clark takes the bridge where he is free to create his own lines over Fuller’s changes) that would more typically come to characterize the Blue Note Hard Bop sound and compositional style for the next ten years.

Fuller admits his mentor was Jay Jay Johnson, yet unlike Johnson’s rapid fire articulated notes, Fuller’s attack is more glissando and funk oriented. His Detroit roots are shared with fellow home boys like Tate, Chambers, The Jones brothers (Hank, Thad & Elvin), Donald Byrd, Pepper Adams and others who all became New Yorkers joining their kindred spirits from Philly, L.A. and other urban areas who eventually made the pilgrimage to the “Apple” as their new home, forming what would become the legendary core of Blue Note recording artists. Bone & Bari is early recorded history, essential proof documenting a movement in transition.
