This set is number 0368 of 7500

18-page booklet is full of photos and info including fully-annotated session notes and personnel for each. Booklet is in VG condition; due to one small ball-point ink notation and some rippling to pages and light h2o stains showing in lower, inside corners of the inside pages. The pages are not stuck together, smeared, pitted or mildewed in any way. Whatever moisture was at one time present on these pages seems to have been quickly dried up. There are no tears and the binding is still solid and tight.
Vinyl, labels, the rice paper anti-static inner-sleeves and box show absolutely no sign of moisture; past or present.

Possessor of the most beautiful tone ever heard in jazz, altoist Johnny Hodges formed his style early on and had little reason to change it through the decades. Although he could stomp with the best swing players and was masterful on the blues, Hodges' luscious playing on ballads has never been topped.

As is true of most Mosaic box sets, it would be very difficult to improve upon this comprehensive issue.
Allmusic.com gives it their top, extremely rarely awarded, 5-STAR rating

After 22 years, altoist Johnny Hodges left Duke Ellington's orchestra in 1951 to go it on his own as a bandleader. Just less than five years later, he returned to Ellington for the final 15 years of his life after having recorded the music heard on this six-LP set.

Hodges's small group, a unit that emphasized blues, ballads, and riff-filled romps, was an extension of the Ellington band. Hodges had a big hit with "Castle Rock", but had trouble at the end making ends meet. Other notable sidemen on these enjoyable performances include trumpeters Emmett Berry and Harold "Shorty" Baker, trombonist Lawrence Brown, and tenors Flip Phillips, Ben Webster, and even John Coltrane on one session; the final session, from Sept. 8, 1955 (after Hodges had already returned to Ellington), also has trumpeter Clark Terry and pianist Billy Strayhorn.

Most of this music had been long out of print at the time this 1989 box was released.

A highly recommended gem of swinging jazz!
