Description

CoilHorse Rotovator, vinyl LP on the Force and Form / K.422 label, released in 1987, Stereo, Cat No ROTA 1.

From an on-line review:

When John Balance refers to Coil's second LP as "the Death album" it's not some crimp-haired goth pose. "Horse Rotorvator" was composed in the growing shadow of a real plague - the AIDS epidemic - and while that's never explicitly mentioned, it overshadows the entirety of this visceral work. Combine that with the powerful hallucinogencis that helped give the LP its title and you know this isn't going to be a stroll in the park. The bacchanalian exuberance of their first LP, "Scatology", is still there; but here sex and love are inextricably linked with disease and death, from the opening "The Anal Staircase" through "Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)" to the final "First Five Minutes After Death" - a draining, but enervating, musical experience.

Musically "Horse Rotorvator" mingles crashing beats, serrated synths, eastern arabesque flavours, piercing brass and even a marching band. Particularly fascinating are two instrumentals, "Penetralia" and "Ravenous", which exemplify the 'soundtrack' side of Coil's oeuvre perfectly.

Unless it's the much-praised "Blood from the Air", this record doesn't really have a stand-out track. "Horse Rotorvator" is a coherent entity like no other Coil LP - genuinely diseased, tormented and bereft, but still defiantly sticking to its esoteric principles. I hesitate to use the adjective, but if there's a better gothic record than this I've never heard it.

There are many grading systems, all much of a muchness and necessarily subjective. My grading is very conservative and very strict to ensure you will not be disappointed.
