Cirkus – One

1973 RCB RCB1

VG+/VG

The only album from the fantastic Cirkus who were a big draw in the clubs around the north east and impressed one businessman so much that he invested money in producing 1000 copies of this album.  All copies were sold in this area and it used to be really easy to find, those days are long gone now though and it’s now very difficult to find any copies at all much less nice ones.  This is one of the better copies I’ve had over the last couple of years.

The gatefold sleeve is notoriously thin and wear prone.  This is a quite decent example though.  It’s clean with no tears or unwanted writing.  The front does have some extremely light rubbing on the black bits but nothing major, in a PVC sleeve at arm’s length it looks just fine.  The rear has a litlle bit of very minor ringwear, it’s almost impossible to find a copy of this sleeve without ringwear on the rear so that’s not unusual, what is unusual is though is how light the wear is, it’s normally much worse that this.  There’s minor scuffing to both top and bottom seams but again not as bad as most copies I see, there’s also a little bit of wear to the spine, all of the writing is readable though.  Inside the gatefold is in excellent shape.  So, not the best sleeve in the world but by no means the worst, you’ll wait a long while before seeing a better example.

The record itself is pressed on extremely thin vinyl, however it’s a good clean pressing with possibly the best sound quality of any UK private pressing, I’m certainly struggling to think of a private LP with better sound, the original pressing of Dark is really good but I think this is better.  Anyway,  the disc is clean and when viewed under a harsh lamp there are only a few minor hairline marks noticeable.  When played the sound is good and clean, there are some minor crackles between tracks on most of side one, track 4 has half a dozen minor clicks which are below the level of the music so you don’t notice them too much, the final track on side 1 does have a few crackles, not really major – no log fires – but they’re definitly there and need mentioning.    Side two’s pretty much the same, there are low level crackles between tracks and very very occasionally these are audible on the quieter parts of the music, that said they didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the music at all when I played it.  So, as with the sleeve, not the M- copy you were hoping for but a good playable copy which most people would accept and keep, and the price is a lot less than a M- one would be too!
