Description
This auction is for one double-sided 16" transcription disc made in 1939 for The Chicago Surface Lines, Chicago's streetcar company prior to the Chicago Transit Authority. I have no idea what the recording contains as I never had a player for such a large record. The recording is of a program titled "Keeping Pace" Parts 1 and 2. The disc was produced by RCA, is 33-1/3 RPM and is copyright 1939. Also included is the original shipping box from RCA to the Chicago Surface Lines Public Relations Dept. via the Railway Express Agency.
I tried to research the record and could find only one reference to it listed in The Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries for 1939. It is entered under the "Dramatic Compositions" section. I am assuming the disc was for radio broadcast as the shipping carton has "Broadcast Records – Do Not Delay" printed on it. I have included screenshots from the Library of Congress book.
There are some scratches on the surface of the disc. This is obviously a rare item and one that could enhance any streetcar, traction or Chicago History collection. There are several companies that will transcribe the contents of the disc to a CD format for a fee. CSL CTA CRT
