Most soul and northern soul fans will be aware of the legendary Shrine label. Based in Washington DC in the mid to late sixties due to the record company politics of the time coupled with poor distribution. all of it’s releases are now extremely rare and very expensive collectors items.

This is the second volume of Horaces record’s trawl through the Shrine catalogue which for the vast majority of these titles was the first time they’d been issued anywhere other than the extremely rare original pressings and indeed for a couple of tracks this is the first time they’d been released anywhere. Horaces is of course a spin off label from the excellent Kent label and the usual high quality Kent job is done here with both the music and the informative sleeve notes from Horace himself and Andy Rix.

The music is firmly rooted in traditional Northern Soul and is pretty much essential to any Northern collector. The album will be of note to most people for J D Bryant’s fabulous “I Won’t Be Coming Back” and if that’s your choice as the best track on the album I couldn’t really argue but my own favourite is Traci’s “Take It From Me” a scorching deep soul ballard released for the first time anywhere here, another previously unreleased track is Leory Taylor’s “I Ain’t Worried About You” which would have been just perfect at Wigan in the late seventies had anyone known about it at the time, this is supposedly the same guy who did “Oh Linda” and is just a tremendous piece of traditional gritty Northern Soul, other highlights are The Prophets which has become a well known Northern track over the last decade and an excellent track from Tommy Knight which as far as I’m aware has never been issued on any of the Shrine CDs, this is an acetate only song in poor quality but what a great record, and then of course there’s the great Ray Pollard with one of his best tracks. This is just a fine compilation of top quality Northern Soul which belongs in any good collection.

Condition:

Sleeve: Pretty strong. It’s similar in construction to most Kent LPs being made of thinish glossy card which shows wear easily.

The front is about as good as you could hope for, very clean with no tears, creases or writing anywhere.

The rear sleeve is in similar nice shape, very clean with no tears, creases or writing anywhere, again this is about as good as you could hope for.

The top seam is totally unworn except for a one inch patch right in the centre where a split has started to develop, it’s actually split all of the way through yet but care will be needed to ensure hat it doesn’t get any worse.

The bottom seam has some light rubbing where it’s been taken on and off the shelf, put it in a PVC sleeve (which I’ll supply) and this won’t get any worse.

The spine is clean and square and although it is very slightly compressed all of the writing is clearly readable.

Record: The record itself is also in fine shape, a lot of Kent albums aren’t the best pressings in the world and sound quality tends to deteriate after a while but there’s no such problems here. The vinyl seems slightly thicker than usual for a Kent album, possibly because this is a UK pressing whereas most other Kent albums were European pressings? Anyway it’s extremely clean with a nice dark shine. Viewed under normal light and it looks just fine with no surface marks evident. When held under a very harsh lamp some extremely light hairline marks are revealed but these are only the marks caused bytaking the record in and out of the sleeve and are totally inaudible.

Both labels are perfect, very clean with no writing, tears or stickers and no visible spindle wear.

When played the record is just as nice as you could want with a nice clean clear sound right across the full dynamic range which just leaps out of the speakers in a most enjoyable way, although it has to be said that some of the productions are rather cacophonus which does nothing for the sound quality. There’s no hint of any groove wear anywhere on the record and the whole album is free from any kind of distortion. There’s no surface noise at all for the whole length of the album and even between tracks is crackle free at high volume, and believe me I did play this one at high volume and enjoyed evry moment of it.

All records carry a full money back guarantee if the condition is not as I’ve described it to be. If you are unhappy get in touch with me before sending anything back or leaving negative feedback, I’m a reasonable sort of person and we can work everything out to your satisfaction if any problems do occur.

Postage:

UK: 1LP £3.00 and then 50p for each additional LP.

Europe: 1LP £4.00 then £1.00 for each additional LP.

Rest Of The World: 1LP £7.00 then £2.00 for each additional LP.

Double albums count as two LPs. Insurance is extra and costs £4.00 per parcel and is highly recommended for expensive purchases. If a parcel is uninsured then I am not responsible for it once it’s left my hands. I have proof that every parcel was posted and I will help in any way I can in any disputes with the postal services but I will not give refunds for anything lost or damaged in the post - there are NO EXCEPTIONS to this. Having said that in 20+ years of posting records all over the globe I’ve only ever lost one parcel in the mail so problems are few and far between.

Sorry but I will not post anything to Taiwan under any circumstances.

I work full time so there’s sometimes a couple of days between payment being received and the parcel being posted, depending on work commitments, I keep these delays to a minimum and in most cases the parcel is posted the day after payment is received but delays do occur and are unavoidable. From UK customers I’d prefer either cheques or postal orders (whichever is easier for you) but I will accept paypal if absolutely necessary, however paypal’s buyer protection scheme is not applicable to anything bought from me. This scheme is a con man’s dream and there are just too many untrustworthy people out there so please be aware that if you intend paying by paypal that scheme does not apply - no exceptions!

Overseas customers must use paypal but are subject to the same conditions that apply to UK customers in that the buyer protection scheme does not apply to anything bought from me.
