This is one of the rarest and hardest-to-find items in Phil Spector's catalog , itself already overloaded to breaking point with rarities, misprints and curiosities of all kinds. What I have here is the Crystals’ SECOND (and final) studio album for the 'Philles' label . Needless to say, the album, originally issued in 1963, has been unavailable in any way, manner or form in more than four decades. The wall of sound - a production method patented by Phil Spector, which involved – among other things - torturing (and, um…perhaps even shooting?) artists for maximum effect (just ask Tina Turner whose bra fell apart during the recording of "River Deep, Mountain High") does not get any more vivid or palpable than here. This is a proverbial fortress of sound, consisting of multitude of overlapping layers of voices, sound effects, cascades of rhythm and ornamentation. A joyful, luscious, retrogressive, a*al-retentive, listening experience, in original BACK-TO-MONO format. Phil Spector is king!!!

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)            Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some writing on its back side (neatly inscribed 16th birthday dedication, about 2 x 2 inches in size)

-         Cover has a small stamp with a name and/or address of the previous owner on the back panel

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1 (front side) and 3 (back side).

-         Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Small, faint, barely visible water stain noted in one corner (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) (less than 2 square inches in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No wrinkles or creases

-         No peel-off marks

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No glue traces or wax residue.

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
