Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with around or less than moderate light spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. These are fine and faint and show little.

Cat Number: LBS 83273.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 131 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Often seen offered as ‘original’ on the black label: not so, this was issued briefly on the blue Liberty label with IS the original and far harder to find especially in really nice condition. The cover is incredibly fragile and prone to every form of wear.

Brief Info: Third album by the kings of ‘swamp rock’, and another beauty with their sound now very much established. Featuring one of the most distinctive vocalists in rock, John Fogerty, this band went from strength to strength. What a pleasure to view and hear this vintage blue label copy in such fine conditions too. The robustly pressed Liberty record has modest plays and only a few ultra fine hairlines that have no sound of course. The cover too has aged little either and looks magnificent, the only blemish of note is a small sticker pull mark that has been vastly improved and now shows little with normal viewing - so-much-so I will not even tell where it is - you try to find it. A wonderful album in great condition and most collectors will love it.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high and prone to all the perils or rubbing, fading, creasing, ringwear and sticker damage.

Cover Grade and Format: EX and worthy of a plus given how fragile it is. It’s a single unlaminated format made with soft card and textured. Printed in England by Liberty Records.

Cover Front & Back: A beautiful example but there is a smallish sticker pull mark that has been carefuly disguised and now shows little with normal visibility. With just tiny corner rubs just showing, these are the only blemishes on what is an outstanding colourful front. Clean, fresh with no fading or creases. Both sides have no ring marks or speckle on the gorgeous textured surfaces.

Top Edge: Barely any traces of wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Light consistent surface rubbing. These types rarely avoid it especially on the resting edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering. Record entered on this right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite thin and obviously fragile, it has only modest compression. Practically all text is present and shows little wear, just tiny clipping to a couple of characters.

Corners: Small tip rubs to the top pair. The bottom two are rubbed consistently with the rest of the edge.

Cover Summary: A splendid all round example of this late 60s cover, one that will prove quite difficult to find much better. The sticker blemish is present but now far less apparent - I have made this apparent with two or three references and if this is an issue, please do not bid. This highly attractive item should please many collectors but not the perfectionist.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+, A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A very few light hairlines only – all superficial minor blemishes that do not sound. A record with few plays on all the evidence backed up lovely clean sound - remember the blue label copies of this classic album are 40-years-old - soon to be replaced by the far more common black label version. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful Liberty record plays even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Barely any noteworthy surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noticed and this is a quality clean pressing. With so many records this great age now sounding noisy with crackle and groovewear, its always nice to offer the earliest copies still in great visual and playing conditions. Few examples will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played modestly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Sticker tears happen, has anyone really not tried to remove one and wished they hadn’t? Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
