Background -

The early Turquoise/Silver label Columbia SAX stereo series of LPs are some of the rarest and most valuable records on the planet. As such, they are truly “Holy Grail” items for serious classical music collectors. This is one such example, made in the UK, issued in stereo from 1960 in outstanding collectors grade condition throughout - jacket and vinyl are near mint!

Hungarian pianist Annie Fischer made her debut at the age of 10 and studied with Ernst von Dohnányi at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Her performance of the Liszt Sonata in B minor won Fischer first prize at the 1933 Liszt International Piano Competition, but her concert career was barely underway when war broke out; Fischer fled to Sweden. Afterwards Fischer returned to Hungary, and although she made her New York debut in 1961, she was only seldom seen in the United States and based her career in continental Europe. In her native Hungary, Fischer was particularly well vaulted and was awarded the Kossuth Prize three times. Mozart and Beethoven were Fischer's bread and butter composers, but she also excelled in later Romantic repertoire and in a few modern works, most notably the Piano Concerto No. 3 of Béla Bartók.

Although regarded as one of the world's greatest pianists late in life, Fischer only seldom recorded, and disliked doing so. Shortly after Fischer's death in 1995, the Hungaroton label issued a complete recording of Fischer in the 32 Beethoven Piano Sonatas. Fischer had been working on this set for the better part of two decades, but prior to that time she had not seen fit to release these recordings. Fischer was an intense and powerful pianist who responded most strongly to her own inner sense of inspiration and drive. In works where this approach was an advantage, such as the "Hammerklavier" Sonata of Beethoven, Fischer was second to none. - Uncle Dave Lewis

CONDITION Details:

The LP JACKET is in near mint minus condition! The jacket has NO seam splits or crushed corners. The corners and seams are solid with just some very light shelf wear. The jacket has flipped over seams at the top and bottom and the front of the jacket is covered in clear plastic, otherwise known as "CLARI-FOIL". The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean - just a beautiful copy!

The LP is in near mint minus condition. We found that the vinyl looked superb on this vintage LP! There are some very light marks on the vinyl (spider marks, nothing serious) and the LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. This item comes with the original inner sleeve. The vinyl may have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels.
A Short Note About LP GRADING -
  • Mint = Only used for sealed items.
  • Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
  • Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
  • Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
  • Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.

For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.

The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
