Label/Format: Columbia – original format with matt, smooth surfaces. Side one has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes. Both these fine letters are pristine.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. This vintage Cliff Richard album appears hardly played, this reitterated by superb, clean mono sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 151 grams. A typical mid-60s heavy pressing.

Rarity and Note: Moderately scarce: this for a major popular artist. Finding hardly played early Cliff Richard albums is quite difficult, especially in mono. This copy somewhat special and another from the same collection as the incredible e.e.r. ‘Wonderful Life’ I am currently offering. It includes an original London Palladium flyer/booking form for the shows dated December 22nd to 24th. The cast including The Shadows and Arthur Askey with very mid-1960s prices – the cheapest being 7/6 (37.5 p) to the best Royal Circle prices of 22/6 (£1.12.5p) – how times change! How many of these booking form/flyers will survive FULLY intact will be few and these will be rarely seen or offered. So a superb little extra to go with this very early mono record. Not one of the more common or lauded Cliff albums, but a wonderful piece of popular music history from one it’s greatest ever exponents.

Brief Info: By 1964 Cliff Richard had done most things, so doing a Pantomime was something new. The show ran over the Christmas period at London’s Palladium Theatre. The music was all new and listening to the record, it is a quite typical Richard set with a generous helping of quality pop songs. Less lauded than many of his early albums and not seen quite as often as most that are more well-known and famous. Beautifully packaged and here including a very rare original Theatre booking form/promotional flyer fully intact with no writing or damage. A wonderful piece of British pop-music history, how many of these in such lovely condition will include this impressive extra that most of fans and collectors will cherish? A rare opportunity not to be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being very critical. Beautifully packaged with a supreme picture of Cliff on the back as seen in close-up. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated. The front is single thickness card with the record storage area via the inside centrefold. Thus this is very fragile and will seldom be found better. The inside is matt with smooth surfaces,. The right side (with The Shadows picture) has top and bottom external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. The original tracing paper lined inner sleeve is also included in superb condition.

Lamination – Front & Back: With a single thickness front, laminate and creasing issues are almost the norm, but this has little to fault and looks very impressive. Just a little burring on the top edge is the very least anyone could expect, and this minimal to say the least. Both sides retain fine shine, freshness and clarity with minimal traces of dulling from the thick record rim (seen under light) and no lifting worthy of special mention.The same goes for marks and creases of which there are hardly any. A little gentle tip creasing minor wear being critical, but this cover-protected sleeve looks lovely and age-defying – you would hardly believe it is 50-years-old.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is superb and will never prove easy to find better. Being a central loader for record storage, the spine area always comes under pressure and such types are often torn, weakened or damaged. This has merely gentle creasing near the very ends and still fully intact with no damage. The entrance end still crisp and neat as are both of the top and bottom flipbacks. Any gentle creasing to the left fragile side minimal, very few and faint, the right Shadows picture is lovely. This inside as impressive as the outside and will prove difficult to find much better.

Top Edges: The folded and laminated back little short of as-made. The fragile front has little wear, just light traces of burring as seen from the front, and this being critical. Minor bowing of the single thickness card near impossible to avoid on laminated covers as natural contraction dictates.

Bottom Edges: Quite amazingly, even better than above with barely any hint of thickening, burring or wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are superb but just the natural curl to the ends of the front. The lack of wear to either is hugely impressive and guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine also: solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. The ends gently tapered in manufacture, these lightly rubbed, but not split which is a major plus on central storage, single thickness spines that are inherently fragile and understrength on this cover design.

Corners: Given how fragile these are, all retain very fine to excellent shape. Slight wear on the spine pair but as minimal as it’s likely to get. All the right ones are crisp, solid and impressive.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile mid 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and practically Mint(-). A superb tracing paper lined early inner sleeve, these being as fragile as they get. Quite honestly, this looks as made with nothing of any note, bar maybe a slight edge crease on the left edge (how critical can a record dealer get?) to fault. All edges unsplit with any discolouration gentle, the window circles pristine as is the frail lining. As I have stated before: clean inner, clean record, this adage stands up perfectly for this copy.

The ‘Palladium’ Flyer Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): and a very rare original piece in it’s own right. This a lovely historical ‘extra’ that did not come with the record itself. It has one horizontal fold and little wear at all, the odd faint corner crease apart with no tears. Printed both sides, one being a promotional side, the other with date details etc, and the lower part a booking form. All the prices in lovely pre-decimal LSD currency and vintage era prices. I would doubt if these are seen or offered often and few probably still existing. This included with a superb early mono record makes for a lovely historic pop-package and a gem-piece for collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very fine visual copy that is clean with very fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. No penetrating scratches or accidents from any mono record player. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality early Cliff Richard album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This quite a long single album and devoid of the usual perils faced by popular mono records of the time. Any surface sounds are minimal, very few and faint and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Pure quality Cliff and and a great copy for fans and collectors. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
