Wow, just, wow. There are retrospective compilations, and then there are retrospective compilations. Then there are expertly curated overviews of careers like Gene Clark's, one of the most enigmatic, shapeshifting, and intriguing songwriters in the (modern) history of songwriting. Collected is a fantastic effort at celebrating the life work of this 20th Century master, from The Byrds to country collaborations with Doug Dillard and The Gosdin Brothers.
However, avid fans will relish in the fact that even this 43-track epic album can't really fit everything in, which is only indicative of how much he made, and how much of what he made was great. A folk, Americana, journeyman legend if ever we could call anyone that, this is a time capsule comprising genuinely precious landmark songs everyone should be familiar with.
