CIVIL RIGHTS 78 - PEEKSKILL STORY - ROBESON / SEEGER ON CHARTER RECORDS
DO NOT SEND PAYMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE RECEIVED AN INVOICE FROM ME WITH MY PERSONAL NOTE!
- This special record was issued by the People Artists on Charter Records and tells the (true) story of the Peekskill Story where a group of Klan members set on a civil rights group in 1949. The Peekskill Riots were anti-communist riots (with anti-black and anti-Semitic undertones that took place at Cortlandt Manor, Westchester County, New York in 1949. The catalyst for the rioting was an announced concert by black singer Paul Robeson, who was well known for his strong pro-trade union stance on civil rights and his outspoken beliefs in international socialism, anti-lynching legislation and anti-colonialist movements. The concert, organized as a benefit for the Civil Rights Congress, was scheduled to take place on August 27 in Lakeland Acres, just north of Peekskill.[
