The debut album by one of the most dramatic and certainly the most visionary of all the British prog bands saddled with the epithet jazz-rock opens with little care for any of that. Taking a deep draught from the King Crimson/Van Der Graaf Generator book of sonic brutality, the opening "Naked Death" is a hard-riffing, thunderous clatter of apocalyptic imagery which -- if Crimson hadn't already dropped the same bomb with "21st Century Schizoid Man" -- might have proved as lethal as the weaponry it discusses. The same taste for Armageddon permeates the remainder of the album. Some spectacular moments drift through the carnage; Robert Calvert's sax and Graham Wilson's guitar might be most comfortable in full bludgeoning mode, but they can show restraint as well. Unfortunately, vocalist Anna Meek is allowed no such luxury, coming across in places like an extremely bad-tempered Sonja Kristina and in others like a dehumanized version of Lydia Lunch. But if the first three tracks, clocking in at 15, four, and six minutes, respectively, leave you feeling battered, bruised, and maybe not inclined to walk this way again, 24 minutes of the closing "Embryonic Fusion" place Catapilla firmly back on course. A solid, sax-driven suite, of course it has its share of death, doom, and destruction-type lyrics and enough moments of spine-chilling chaos to remind you that Van Der Graaf's similarly side-long "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" was fresh on the racks as this album came together. Unfortunately, such comparisons -- though valid -- are also unhelpful. No matter how influenced one band might be by another, it takes a lot more than a Xerox mind to pull off a piece of music this long this successfully. The fact is, Catapilla not only completes the marathon, they also leave you wondering how 24 minutes passed so quickly.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY DAVE THOMPSON, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
"With tasty, silent and naked hands, the breaking days ways their commerce the routine grey face broke on fools we lay down bound to all these rules.” Guitar passages are audacious psychedelic rave. “Staying impotent, settling down, just means that death, comes fast around.” And brass sound varies from scared mouse to angry cat and from ruttish hyena to hungry lion. “Living with me, a rose, into me, a cavernous waste, into me, a deserted shore. Into me, a thunderous cave. A thunderous cave crashed by lightning, its measure outmost wild. Under this fury, the rose has grown, a rose, so rich, so pure.” And the female vocals are masterful and unstinted.

The WHITE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were routinely distributed among the radio stations before the LP was released to the public, sometimes as much as 4 months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD:
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new. (A SUPERFICIAL 'HAIRLINE' SCUFF NOTED ALONG ABOUT 70% OF SIDE 1, NOT EXPECTED TO AFFECT PLAY)
(b) White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 30:1.
(c) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 3 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1, 4 and 4 inches / 1 inch = 2.5 centimeters).
- Cover has some visible fraying/tattering on all three seams
- Cover has all four corners slightly dinged (nothing significant)
- Visible shelf noted on the opening side
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant) ; Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold
- Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners.
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
