Description
This is a rare classical records collection that is no longer available. This collection has 19 rigid boxes wrapped in a leather-like material protected by a rigid sleeve that pulls out of the box set. The lettering is in gold leafing. Each box set contains 5 high quality vinyl 33 1/3 LP records pressed by Deutsche Grammophon, Philips, and Archiv Produkton. The records are protected in a double sleeve. Also included inside each box set is a high gloss booklet listing music, composers, historical background and artist for the period/composer of that set. The original set (Beethoven 1) includes a booklet on the history and future of Carnegie Hall entitled “Carnegie Hall: Looking Ahead”.
What you get is a collection containing a history of classical music from Beethoven in the 1770’s up to Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin in the 20th Century. Some of the best known orchestras and conductors perform on these classical LP’s. You’ll hear music perfectly performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, and more. Famous conductors include Colin Davis, Herbert von Karajan, Karl Böhm, Bernard Haitink, Karl Richter, Rafael Kubelik, Seiji Ozawa, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Leonard Bernstein. You will enjoy such classics as The Magic Flute, Requiem, The Creation, Symphonie Fantastique, Bolero, La Traviata, Handel’s Messiah, Carmen, Romeo and Juliet, and the Blue Danube.
The collection was especially prepared for use as a fund-raiser to save and restore Carnegie Hall in New York City. The effort was Spear-headed by Isaac Stern, who was determined to save the Old Hall from the wrecker's ball. This was a subscription series with periodic volumes produced and sent to American Express participating subscribers over an extended period of time.
This set was purchased by my sister, (who passed away), in the 1970’s through American Express. All of the LP's are in beautiful condition. Most, if not all, are in mint condition. Very few were ever played.
