"As the credited music composer for ORLOFF AND THE INVISIBLE MAN and José Bénazéraf’s FRUSTRATION, Camille Sauvage’s name imprinted itself in my mind as one to remember. These two films are equally crazy, but in very different ways. ORLOFF is the destitute Eurociné monster creaker that could have been aimed at small children, if not for its invisible man rape scene and a creepy performance by Howard Vernon. FRUSTRATION is turgid sexploitation that could probably act as punishment for those seeking illicit thrills. Unifying these two disparate works is the heavily percussive, free form jazz of Sauvage, a composer for library music label Montparnasse 2000 (which also employed Jess Franco-collaborator Daniel J. White). Sauvage’s sometimes maddening, sometimes campy outbursts of drums, finger-snaps, vibes, electronics, and screeching saxophone confirmed that these already unhinged films were not coming from a sane place.
"Fantasmagories" is a library album that contains none of the music from the above films, but exhibits all the spastic joys found in those works. As signaled by the vampire on the cover, the theme to this album is horror, a suitable genre for Sauvage. Beginning with a rumbling electronic noise that quickly makes its way up the scales into a high pitch squeal, the first track is a sparsely composed piece that incorporates flute, Jew’s harp, horns, and drums into an atonal stew. Track three, "Magma," incorporates an actual structure thanks to a beatnik bass line and a chorus of horns. A few plucks of a Jew’s harp notwithstanding, this song wouldn’t be too out of place in an episode of "Peter Gunn". The fifth track quietly sputters along until an ominous bass line makes a cinematic appearance. The following track is a finger-snapping jazz piece made weird by electronic keyboards and a flamboyantly out-of-tune sax at the end. "Pavillon Des Agites" moves right along with a nice Cuban rhythm. The wonderfully titled "Requiem Pour Satan" conjures images of a smoky nightclub, a sultry stripper somnambulistically grooving to a house-band growing weary as the hours pass. The appearance of a female singer mimicking the saxophone chorus is quite effective."
