FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION is R.E.M.’s deepest and darkest album. R.E.M’s third full-length recording delivers the purest distillation of the band’s early sound. With the exception of the horn-laden radio-friendly “Can’t Get There From Here”, the songs form a connected sounds cape. Nearly transparent production highlights the glittering guitar arpeggios, active bass, and the disciplined, patterned drum lines, with organ and spare string arrangements adding texture to several pieces. And then there are the vocals: dense harmonies of voices calling out to each other, a rich humming and howling around Michael Stipe. There is a lot of strings on the album and it moves slightly away from the jangling guitars of their first two albums.

“Feeling Gravtiy’s Pull” opens up the album with a bizarre sound and then slides into an old favorite, “Maps & legends.” “Driver 8” may be the best song they’ve ever done. “Old Man Kensy” and “Wednell Gee” are two prime examples of the dark tone the album has. “Cant’ Get There From here” was a big MTV hit and helped bring some mainstream attention to the band. The album is best contemplated in its entirety, and the songs reward careful, repeated listening. This is a seminal alternative album, its material evocative, its ultimate meanings elusive. If you LP collection has room for only a few R.E.M. albums, FABLES should be one of them.

 This LP was ranked by Rolling Stone Magazine as #41 of the Top 100 Best LPs of the eighties. Q Magazine gave this Limited Edition 180 Gram Vinyl Pressing Four Stars out of five and said it made for very interesting archival listening. It shows a group cresting the cusp between art rock alternativism and chart friendliness... The general impression is of a band free from constraints rocking with a vengeance.

R.E.M’s later albums have sold by the container load. But they had to make albums like this to build a fan base that brought them to notice. A number of critics place this record as their best. The band does sound as though they are having to work to be heard. There is significant energy in “Finest Work Song” and The Byrds-like “Welcome To The Occupation.” It has been some time since Michael Stipe has as many words to say as he did in “Its The End Of The World As You Know It” and “The One I Love” has to be one of their best songs of all-time.
