CAL TJADER…..LATIN JAZZ/MAMBO LEGEND!

Leader (1954–1962)

Tjader soon quit Shearing after a gig at a San Francisco jazz club called The Blackhawk. In April 1954, he formed The Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Quintet. The members were brothers Manuel and Carlos Duran on piano and bass respectively, Bayardo "Benny" Velarde on timbales, bongos, and congas, and Edgard Rosales on congas (Luis Miranda replaced Rosales after the first year). Back in San Francisco and recording for Fantasy Records, the group produced several albums in rapid succession, including Mambo with Tjader.

The Mambo craze reached its pitch in the late 1950s, a boon to Tjader's career. Unlike the exotica of Martin Denny and Les Baxter, music billed as "impressions of" Oceania (and other locales), Tjader's bands featured seasoned Cuban players and top-notch jazz talent conversant in both idioms. Some consider his Modern Mambo Quintet his greatest band, and perhaps the greatest small-combo Latin jazz band ever.

Tjader also cut several notable straight-ahead jazz albums for Fantasy under separate groups, most notably The Cal Tjader Quartet (composed of bassist Gene Wright, drummer Al Torre, and Vince Guaraldi). As such, he is considered a member of San Francisco's flourishing 1950s bebop scene. Tjader is sometimes lumped in as part of the West Coast (or "cool") jazz sound, although his rhythms and tempos (both Latin and bebop) had little in common with the work of Los Angeles jazzmen Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, or Art Pepper. He did team up with legendary jazz saxophonist Stan Getz in 1958, producing a well-received album.

Tjader and his band opened the second Monterey Jazz Festival in 1959 with an acclaimed "preview" concert. The first festival had suffered financially. Tjader is credited with bringing in big ticket sales for the second and saving the landmark festival before it had even really started.

The Modern Mambo Quintet disbanded within a couple of years. Tjader formed several more small-combo bands, playing regularly at such San Francisco jazz clubs as the Blackhawk.

In spite of his lack of pigmentation Callen Radcliffe Tjader Jr., better known as Cal Tjader, was the coolest cat in Latin jazz.The multi-talented percussionist recorded dozens of albums over the years, most of them exploring his sincere and profound interest in this genre.

Mas Ritmo Caliente captures, exemplifies and defines that magic moment when cool jazz met hot, North American rhythm met Carribean and East Coast met West. Culling talent from each locale, Tjader divided the album among three separate recording sessions in San Francisco, Chicago and New York. In 1957 these musicians were in peak form and exhibit the youthful exhuberance that was part of the Latin Jazz explosion.

The album opens with "Perdido" (1942), one of the first Latin jazz tunes ever written. Other highlights include "Poinciana Cha Cha" an upbeat number that allows the groove to move you, and "Mongorama" by Mongo Santamaria who at the ripe old age of thirty-five is the senior member of this group! The song is an excuse to wail and wail they do as Mongo and Willie Bobo share the limelight.

The final cut, "Perfidia Cha Cha," begins with Jerry Sanfino on flute and Cal on vibes playing the opening bars. Then "Chombo" Silva takes the lead with a masterful improvisation. Eventually, each soloist takes a turn while Mongo, Luis Kant and Willie Bobo churn out beats that you cannot sit still to. At 8:12 the engineer pulls down on the faders because he has run out of vinyl. The musicians keep playing as they always do, and I would give the world to hear the rest of that jam session. In the meantime, I'll savor what we have on Mas Ritmo Caliente by Cal Tjader Con Amigos. Are you sure that cat is white?

Vinyl Grading:

Still Sealed (SS):  Sealed at factory and never opened. Disc is assumed to be undamaged and mint, but this cannot be proven until the album is actually opened and the disc examined.

Near Mint (NM):  This is highest grade assigned to opened, handled records. The vinyl is virtually flawless, bright and shiny. A very minor, barely visible scuff or two may be permitted, but no scratches. The disc should play with no audible noise. The label is bright, clean and unmarked.

Very Good Plus Plus (VG++):  Disc plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a hairline scratch or two but nothing that is obvious or affects play. Vinyl is bright and shiny; label is clean and unmarked.

Very Good Plus (VG+):  Some visible surface wear, very minor scratches and scuffs, but minimal impact on the sound quality. Vinyl will still have good luster; labels may have minor imperfections (small labels or initials, etc.) but otherwise clean.

Very Good (VG):  Vinyl will have noticeable scratches or scuffs that cause minor surface noise, but do not overpower the music. There will be no skips. Vinyl may appear somewhat dull and grayish. Labels may have small tears, tape marks, larger writing, etc. but still easily legible. There may be wear or deformation of the spindle hole. It Will Be Sold As Is

Good (G):  Well-played, dull, grayish vinyl with deeper scratches and wear causing distracting surface noise (hisses, pops, cracks and other nasties). The record will still play through without any skips. Labels may be significantly defaced or damaged.

Cover/Picture Sleeve Grading:

Still Sealed (SS):  Album is still in the factory-applied shrink-wrapping.

Mint (M):  Absolutely perfect; no corner dings, marks, tears, dents, impressions from the disc, or other flaws. Cover should appear as if a record has never been inside.

Near Mint (NM):  Very minor signs of wear or cover impressions. Artwork is as close to perfection as possible. If There Are Any Drill Hole, tyny SawCut or Diagonal Cut They Will Be fully Described!

Very Good Plus Plus (VG++):  Minor disc impression or slight corner creases, no wrinkles, puckers, seam splits or writing on the cover. Artwork is clean and unworn and there is no ink wear.

Very Good Plus (VG+):  Cover is clean but may have minor writing or marks and may show slight wear. There may be just the start of ring wear, where the disc has created a raised area on the cover that resulted in the ink wearing off the paper. There may be slight discoloration or staining, minor seam wear, but no splits or tears. Corners may have small creases or fraying.

Very Good (VG):  Covers are worn and used. Seams may be starting to split or may have been unobtrusively repaired with clear tape or clear glue. (There is moderate ringwear, but the artwork is still attractive. There may be yellowing or discoloration and there may be larger writing, labels, or marks. Corners may have damage or creases and there may be scratches or gouges that otherwise damage the artwork.

Good (G):  Several (but not all of the following flaws will apply: Seam splits, large marker writing, major seam splits, significant ring wear, damaged corners, tears, cuts, gouges, masking or duct tape seam repairs, or other flaws and damage. Again, probably only useful to fill a collection niche until something better can be found.
