TITLE: Jazz Giant
CONDITION:
Sleeve: The front cover is a strong VG++ w/ just a little light wear and an extremely tiny nick at the top middle of the cover slick. The back cover is VG+ w/ some light aging and wear with a few very tiny light spots/stains and some light ring wear. The seams are intact except for a 1/2" split at the top right corner. Original "frame style" cover.
Record: Gorgeous! Looks Mint- w/ high original gloss w/ just a few light surface scuffs. I play graded this entire LP and Some parts play a fantastic Mint- but there are some sections of tracks 4 & 6, Side A and tracks 3, 5, 6 & 7 Side B that play w/ just a little light random background needle distortion/surface noise. Not bad and not too pronounced but it is evident. Even those passages still have great sound presence as does the rest of the LP / VPI cleaned / By the spindle hole it looks like this LP may have been played once.
COMMENTS: Nice original deep groove copy of this rare and superb Norgran LP w/ classic David Stone Martin cover. Yellow & black trumpeter label.
Personnel: Bud Powell (piano); Ray Brown, Curly Russell (bass); Max Roach (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on February 23, 1949 and in New York, New York in February 1950.
Easily one of Bud Powell's finest albums, JAZZ GIANT presents sessions from 1949 and '50 that find the revered bop pianist in a spare trio setting. With drummer extraordinaire Max Roach and either Ray Brown or Curly Russell on bass, Powell clearly revels in the spotlight, with his astoundingly deft and emotive playing showcased on both thrilling upbeat numbers ("Tempus Fugue-It") and wistful downbeat tunes ("I'll Keep Loving You"). For Powell aficionados, this disc is truly essential.
