BOB DYLAN – GREAT WHITE WONDER – 1st pressing : plain white label & white, unstamped gatefold cover. Summer 1969.

 

According to Clinton Heylin’s excellent  Bootleg : the secret history of the other recording industry (which you should own), the first pressing of this double album was around 1000 – 2000 copies (the exact number had them stumped).  As first printed, the album even lacked a title until one record store owner said she wanted to advertise it and what was the title? Coincidentally, she also had a name for it - the guys said "uh, great" and went out and got a rubber stamp (“GWW”) and proceeded to stamp the hell out of the second pressing. And thus a shadow industry was born. Paving the way for those 46 slightly different versions of Let It Be outtakes that would shortly pave the world...

 

The album is VG+, with the vinyl having no marks, in the original glassine inner sleeves, the label's plain with no identifying names nor numbers in the dead wax; the LP cover is actually very glossy (go figure - cheap vinyl, but good cardboard) with some very light ring wear. It’s my original copy, bought the first day of art college in 1969 when the dorm literally cleared out on the run with everyone looking for this one. Then the trick became getting someone else to play their copy, so yours didn’t wear out…
