Description
From the archives of a noted Australian rock’n’roll and entertainment historian comes this SUPER RARE Billy Thorpe and the Aztec at Sunbury music festival pack which includes extras that very rarely see the light of day more than 40 years later. This comprises the double live album from Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Live! At Sunbury. Released in 1972, it has eight rockin’ tracks over four sides. Sunbury, renowned as Australia’s Woodstock, took place over the Australia Day long weekend in January 1972 and the Aztec’s blistering appearance is the stuff of Australian rock music legend. This double LP set includes the extremely rare die-cut 3D pop-up cartoon cover, also in pristine condition. PLUS an original poster for Sunbury The Movie from 1972. Measures 58cm x 40cm but is in generally average condition with quite a few folds, crinkles, turned corners, insect damage and minor tears. Still, though, this is an EXTREMELY RARE document for an EXTREMELY RARE Australian concert movie. Produced and directed by John Dixon, the movie (more a documentary) was hosted by Molly Meldrum. PLUS - and EVEN RARER - comes two colour prints of Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, publicity shots presumably taken from the concert movie. Condition report: The gatefold cover in very good condition on the outside with no noticeable marks except for ring wear, the interior gatefold appears to have been damp at some stage and has buckled, but not badly, along the fold. The two LPs – Australian pressing, 1972, Havoc, HST 4003/04 – are Very Good Plus, with a couple of scuffs and light scratches. One LP, HST 4004, has a small tear-shaped white ghosting across the first track but plays fine. Both discs have pops and crackles at the beginning of the discs and on some quiet bits but this is Billy Thorpe so quiet moments are rare. The pop-up insert is in very good condition with the exception of the back which shows boot or shoes prints. Two colour prints are in good condition although mould damage on half on each back section; has leached through to a minor extent on the Aztecs’ photo but with no appreciable damage on the Billy Thorpe photo. The movie poster is in average condition, with quite a few folds, crinkles, turned corners, insect damage and minor tears. Check photos for condition etc. This is an extremely RARE and valuable piece of Australian music history. The double LP is fairly easy to find - in pristine unplayed condition much less so. The pop-up cartoon insert/whatever thingy is much less common. The movie poster is even less common. And the colour prints I've never even come across mentions of before. All of them together in one auction - PRICELESS. Check my other auctions for rarities and extremities across all genres, including Australian rock. Contact me for more photos or information.
