This is the 8th mono variant and the 1st issue on the, short lived, single boxed EMI label. In 1969 the company re-issued all previous Beatles parlophone albums with this new design. All were available in stereo but only three in mono, of which this is one. By 1969 the dominant format had switched from mono to stereo, largely due to the introduction of the compatible cartridge, which meant that mono record players could be adapted to play stereo discs without harming the groove. It therefore made sense to buy a stereo copy, ready for when you could afford a stereo system to play it on. Also, the mono variant had been continuously available in the shops since its release in 1963, resulting in a very limited number being sold in this format, in 1969.
Both sides of the disc have a superb, deep glossy finish with no signs of groove wear. Audio quality is clear and sharp with no appreciable deterioration, just a little surface noise between tracks. However, there are numerous light handling lines over the vinyl and some more noticeable needle marks which do cause clicking here and there, mainly confined to just three tracks. The powerful mono mix tends to rise above these but nevertheless they are audible.
The labels are in fine condition, displaying numerous spindle trails around the centre area, with the silver lettering vibrant and undamaged.
The Garrod and Lofthouse cover is in very good shape, with just a few creases but showing no laminate lift. The opening edges are undamaged. The tri-flipbacks are solid and complete and the back panel has no writing, just age toning.
The original inner sleeve is undamaged, just displaying a few age spots here and there.
All in all, a fine example of this very rare variant.
