THE BEATLES - 'PLEASE, PLEASE ME'

In May 1963, a few weeks after the 1st gold & black labelled stereo release of this LP, EMI changed their label design to the familiar 'yellow & black' design. This initial design carried exactly the same text as the gold label, but it was quickly noticed that as the new design already incorporated a '33 1/3' speed indicator in the upper left area, the small one in the 9 o'clock position was now obsolete and it was immediately removed. This label design is arguably rarer than black & gold labelled copies.

This outstanding copy dating from c.May 1963 bears that initial yellow & black Parlophone label: PCS 3042

Both omit the 'Sold in UK..' & 'Recording First Published.' texts but retain that small '33 1/3' indicator'.

A single letter 'M' is embossed around in the centre of the side 1 label.

Housed in an early 'gold' type front laminated, tri-flipback 'Ernest J. Day' printed stereo cover with the 'Angus McBean' photographer's credit positioned in the extreme lower right corner - beginning below the 'S' of 'Songs'.

Complete with its 'Use Emitex..' poly-lined inner-sleeve.

Labels: EXCELLENT +

A spectacular set which are clean, bright and unworn, displaying just a small handful of light spindle trails around each unworn centre hole.

Visual: EXCELLENT +

Pristine, deep-gloss surface which are perfectly clean and totally unmarked in strong daylight with not a surface marks or scratch in sight. Close inspection directly beneath my powerful halogen desk lamp reveals just one or two light marks and a handful of harmless wispy paper hairlines but very little in the way of visual wear of any significance at all. Both sides lie 100% flat on the turntable when playing.

Play: EXCELLENT +

This copy has received just a handful of careful plays on good quality equipment and as a result, the sound is clear, clean & warm throughout. My single, careful play-check at volume detected no trace of any groove/play wear, crackle or background interference on any track or in either channel. In fact, apart from 3 soft 'ticks' at the end of 'Chains' a a hint of light/normal vinyl background between track, there is nothing else to fault audibly on this superb copy.

Cover

EXCELLENT

A wonderful example of this rare cover which retains a totally unscratched and unrubbed high-gloss front panel laminate where the only traces of wear is a small laminate bubble just above John's head and a tiny bump to the lower edge. However, there are no 'thumbnail' wrinkles or even any spine bends. There is a little shelfwear rubbing to the lower corners and a minor bruise to the upper left but no splits or tears to any. Both opening edges are clean, straight and unworn, showing just two or three tiny 'pushes' to the rear edge but definitely no tears of feathering. The rear panel is extremely clean, white and unyellowed having clearly been carefully stored in a non-smoking environment all its life. There are a few extremely faint handling & storage marks but nothing significant or any writing or missing paper. All of the delicate flipbacks are in-place and fully intact, with just a tiny bend to the lower left corner. Both seams are smooth and unsplit, with no missing or flaking laminate and the spine is clean & fully worded.

Clean & flat with some minor storage wrinkling but no writing or splits to any seam.
