Beatles - The Collection MFSL Box Set 14 LPs!!
If you're viewing this auction, you already know all about this box set. The picture is generic; that is not a picture of my box. Here are the key points:
* I am the original owner, serial number is 19480
* Set is complete: box, GeoDisc, warranty card (not filled out), certificate of authenticity (19480) on inside flap of covers booklet, all outer sleeves, interior cardboard sleeves, rice paper record sleeves, and records are here.
* Box is in mediocre condition. From a functionality p.o.v., the box is in excellent condition. Strong, sturdy, latches & hinges function well. Good to go. From a collector's p.o.v., you will be disappointed in the box. There is a quite noticeable "dirt line" on the top of the box, where the rearmost inch or so protruded beyond the cabinet it was stored in, allowing years of dust to "imprint" itself. The hinges and latch are lightly tarnished, hinges more so than latch. There are several minor but noticeable scuffs on the box, nothing heinous though. When the doors are "opened," there are typical signs of age & some imprinted dust on the interior portion of the doors, especially towards the bottom, and more on the right-hand door than the left-hand one with the album listing. I can say some nice things about the box, however. There are no stickers, adhesive residue, rips, tears, or written markings. The white-lettered album listing is pristine. The gold-imprinted labels on the exterior are bright, shiny & vibrant.
* The outer leaves of the covers-booklet are yellowed with age, and one has a bad crease. The first page or two in from the "ends" of the booklet also show some signs of age, but not badly. The remainder of the pages are in great condition. All pages are crisp with vibrant color.
* The GeoDisc sleeve shows some signs of age. The GeoDisc itself is NM.
* From a functionality p.o.v., the outer album sleeves are in spectacular condition. No splits, delamination, etc. Sturdy & crisp. Spines are in great shape. From a collector's p.o.v., there are some issues. One sleeve (can't remember which) shows a distinct "damp line" that is parallel to the spine and extends in towards the rest of the album by about an inch. The other issue would be the color. I have no point of reference, but if these sleeves were originally true-white, then there is obvious coloration due to age on all of them. If the original color was more of a creamy-white, or off-white, then I guess the sleeves are in spectacular condition. Other than the above, each sleeve is in excellent, semi-pristine condition.
* From a functionality p.o.v., the inner album folding-sleeves are in spectacular condition. No tears, creases, etc. Sturdy & crisp. From a collector's p.o.v., there might be some issues. I have no point of reference, but if these sleeves were originally true-white, then there is some obvious coloration due to age on most of them. If the original color was more of a creamy-white, or off-white, then I guess the sleeves are in spectacular condition.
* All of the rice-paper sleeves are in NM condition. They are perfect.
* Each side of each album is a perfect NM condition, with one exception, which I will detail below. Simply put, if I told you that each album had never been played, you would believe me. The exception is You Like Me Too Much, on side-2 of Help! There is a noticeable scuff mark on only that track. I remember being initially alarmed, then relieved. So, if my memory serves correctly, that means I saw the scuff, freaked out, then played it and found the scuff was not sonically noticeable. Can't guarantee that, as I haven't owned a turntable for 15 years, but that is what I remember. All albums are perfectly flat, and have been stored vertically throughout their life.
* I'm going on memory here, but this is the playback history as I recall it. Some albums (or sides of albums) were not played at all, probably the earlier stuff. At most, some albums or sides of albums were played 3-4 times. I taped most of it immediately as my primary listening at that time was done in the car. Any albums played were played on an Oracle turntable with a Sumiko Talisman-S cartridge. I owned a Nitty Gritty record cleaner at the time, but I'm fairly certain I never had need to clean any of these albums.
-- If you're a collector interested solely in resale value, then the actual records and rice paper sleeves should be of great value. Maybe the inner & outer sleeves. Definitely not the box.
-- If you're buying this because you love high-fidelity vinyl and want to hear the best Beatles' LPs ever made, then you are in luck! These sound ridiculously good, and (as mentioned) the albums themselves are in fabulous NM condition.
