READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
Beatles LP Revolver 1968 Scarcer In-House Jacksonville Labels, HOT MIX!
Strangely odd for a Jacksonville with later pressing plates, this 1968 Subsidiary of…copy features a peculiarly hot mix. In fact, it’s so hot that if you listen closely, you can hear the tape hiss start up at the beginnings of each side.
Paul’s bass is right up front throughout the album. Also, in Taxman and She Said, She Said, Ringo’s cymbals sizzle. They almost drown out some of the high-end on the guitars.
*Tomorrow Never Knows--- But perhaps most interesting, has anyone ever heard the mystery random thumps in this track? I’ve always wondered what they were. Maybe with so many hands on the consoles working the tape loop faders, one or two people may have been bumping into the console or microphones.
If you’ve never heard them before, listen to this copy. They occur throughout the entire track, but the ones that will stand out for you are the following:
**After the last “It is being” has been sung, listen closely a few seconds later.
**During the backwards guitar lead, there’s a fairly loud one after the third phrase. This one is the most audible on the regular pressings, but it really calls your attention on this copy.
**On the line, “Listen to the color of your dreams,” another thump occurs on the word, “to.”
If you have a really good set of headphones, you will hear several more during this track that you won’t hear on your regular Capitol or Apple issues.
Vinyl--- VG+/EX. The visual flaw to Side 1 is that there is a very long scuff that traverses the entire playing surface, starting below the label and continuing on after the label. The scuff cannot be felt with the fingertip. Your stylus will track silently through it on the entire side.
Additionally, there are a few hairlines that your stylus won’t notice. Side 2 has a few extremely light hairlines. Side 1 shines with new gloss about 90%, Side 2 about 95%.
Plates--- W7/W5. Letter “O” in the dead wax on both sides makes this copy pressed in Jacksonville.
Cover--- G. Could use a replacement. All three seams are weak. Bottom seam has a one-inch split at the mouth. Front and back covers have general wear, nothing you wouldn’t expect.
Labels--- EX/EX. In-house Jacksonville labels are most often found on first pressings of Revolver. They feature the first labels to use the full names of “John Lennon-Paul McCartney” beneath the song titles. There was a very late Scranton pressing that used them, as well as the consignment pressings from the first run. Both labels look nearly 1968-freshly printed. But they also each have a few light spindle marks that you’ll have to hunt for. Some sellers would go ahead and grade them NM.
Inner Sleeve--- VG. Generic white inner sleeve with no die-cut hole for the labels to show is present. Both sides have light to moderate yellowing and light dirtwear. Bottom seam has a split about 3 inches long. One side seam has been repaired with Scotch tape.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.
RIAA: 16
**This seems to be a rare mix. I’ve compared this copy at the local record store’s listening station to two other Apple pressings from my collection, and an orange Capitol and a purple Capitol copy that the store had in stock.**
None of them are this hot.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
