This vintage Beatles record was acquired this past week at an estate auction in rural Michigan. Please rely on the photos provided, what visual description I am able to offer, but primarily use your own better knowledge and expertise in making your bidding evaluations. I make a point of finding interesting items to present in this auction format, but I'm not always aware of the finer points. Ask questions when need be.

Please read this description carefully. This record comes directly from the estate of the original owner. She had apparently been an avid record buyer and took meticulous care of her collection. I found this copy of Yesterday And Today within one of many boxes of albums at the auction to settle her estate. My sense is that she was an older lady who became a fan of The Beatles music early on in their popularity. (There were other early Beatles albums that I'll be listing later.) All of her other LPs were much more mainstream, i.e. Andy Williams, Lawrence Welk, etc. Regardless, they all were very well taken care of. The significance of all this is that it is clear to me that everything about this particular record is genuine and unaltered. She bought it, she played it a couple or so times, then put it away for good. I'm sure she never knew there was another image underneath, and absolutely sure no one has ever attempted to remove the paste-over image.

When I saw this copy I noticed that it seemed I could see something underneath the photo of the group sitting around the trunk off to the right. As it turns out it is the image of Ringo's shirt that isn't completely hidden by the thin paper of the pasted over photo. A little research got me interested in preparing the photos and this description. I've supplied many large scale images to give you just as much visual information as I can. The front of the jacket was scanned in four sections to present every square inch in full detail. Also, I used some extreme photo editing settings to create one of the images below that should be interesting to you.

Here are some of the details unseen in the photos. Except for a 3/16" nip in the bottom of the opening, there are no seam splits in the cover. The paper along the thin edges of the cover are intact as well, with only an occasional nick or bump, very few, very minor. Along the left hand edge the lettering is all legible and in good conditon. The paste-over covers just the very tops of the letters. Throughout the edge it reads, "Yesterday...And Today - The Beatles", and further down the word "Stereophonic", a small Capitol logo, and ST 2553.

The cover seems about 1/8" in too short in width for the record. (I learned from research that to remove the excess paper from the paste-over the entire jacket was trimmed on the right, or opening side.) On the back of the cover in the bottom right hand corner is the number "2" next to an RIAA logo. Both the front and back of the cover are clean with no writing or hand made marks. There is some natural yellowing of the paper as it approaches the far edges of the cover, most noticable on the back. It looks to me that almost every and any mark on either side was made from storage, i.e. ring wear.

The inner sleeve is not the original. Instead it is one of the plastic lined paper sleeves that people used to buy in quanity to protect their records.

The disc itself is in quite amazing condition. I did play both sides all the way through on my stereo and it tracked fine, with little if any pops or clicks. Scratches if any are minor and smudges and finger prints, etc. are minimal. There was an accumulation of static dust that I cleaned away with a Discwasher and the D4 fluid supplied with it. This allowed me to see what would not easily be cleaned. On track 3 of each side is a tiny, (less than the size of the head of a pin), speck that would not be removed. Perhaps some sort of deeper cleaning would take care of it, I'm not sure. All in all, I think most would agree the vinyl is in very good condition. Also, I've supplied scans of each label. They are in excellent condition with little indication of spindle marks or any flaws. The disc is not warped at all.

My guess is there are examples of this record remaining that are flawless. This one is not. I want to be clear about that. But I would also guess that a stereo copy of this record in this condition is not often or at least easily found. I am not a record dealer. I am just a fan of The Beatles and I find things to present on eBay. That combination led me to discover this record. As often as I find records I would like to have, I almost never find them in this fine of condition, especially rock and roll records. The nice condition makes this rare record even rarer still. I will be extremely careful to provide secure packaging and safe transit for your new treasure.

This is a detail of the area where Ringo's shirt can be seen. It was done on my scanner with no editing. You can even see the bottom of the lapel on the right and a faint outline of Ringo's head.

This is the same scan with the setting for contrast bumped way up and the setting for brightness reduced way down. It's almost as if you can see through the paper.

Bidding Tips For The New User

If you are among the less experienced eBay users, the following thoughts may help you better understand this particular auction format and bidding process. Unlike traditional auctions that continue until the item is won by a determined bidder as the competitors voluntarily drop out, eBay auctions are won by the bidder who has submitted the highest dollar amount before a precise, time certain close. The matter of who's bid is on top at the final tick of the clock, regardless of anyone's desire to continue, has spawned the bidding method referred to as "sniping". Here is an explanation to consider.

"Sniping", a common practice of placing a bid in the final moments of an auction, is the strategy of choice for many eBay users attempting to win an item. It is based on the notion that a surprise bid in the final seconds is the best way to win because it places the current high bidder in the off balance position of not being able to submit another, higher bid before time runs out. (Of course, that plan can backfire when the "sniper" finds he or she did not bid enough to overcome the current highest bidder, and the time to try again has run out.)
