Beach Boys Capitol Years 7 LP Vinyl UK Box Set

Great vinyl box set from UK, all contents are in beautiful shape, but unfortunately the store that originally sold it taped the box shut and some of that tape is discolored and still stuck to the sides and back of the box.  That said, the box looks pretty good otherwise with a bit of staining and some small splits in the box along the edges, typical of a box of this vintage (30+ years old).

The Capitol Years was a Beach Boys box set released in England in 1980. This box set was available as an import only in the United States and carried a price tag of $99.99. Back then, not many people were able to plunk down $100 for this set.

This was advertised as a six-LP set containing 106 songs. The Capitol Years was released on the World label which was a subsidiary of EMI, the parent company of Capitol. The 109 songs include every 1960s hit by the Beach Boys plus most of their other, better songs. Each disc is centered on a theme and the songs are presented in chronological order.

The production is crystal clear even by today’s standards. I am guessing that virgin vinyl was used as opposed to United States releases that use recycled vinyl. Each LP is contained in its own sleeve and a booklet gives a history of all the songs.

There is a seventh unadvertised disc included in the set. This disc contained the 17 non-Beach Boys songs that Brian Wilson produced for the Capitol label. It included both sides of eight single releases plus one more song.

There are eight sides by the all-girl surf group the Honeys. The Honeys were comprised of Brian Wilson’s wife Marilyn Rovell, her sister Diane Rovell, and their cousin Ginger Blake. Six of the songs were released in 1963. The best are “Shoot The Curl” with good girl harmonies and the superb “Pray For Surf" with a sax line running throughout and stunning Beach Boy-like harmonies.

The real rarities were two songs by the Honeys from 1969. “Goodnight My Love” was a fairly straightforward presentation of this old standard. “Tonight You Belong To Me” was a departure from the Honeys' surf songs of the early 1960s. It reminded me of the old girl group, the Caravelles, who had a big hit with the song “You Don’t Have To Be A Baby To Cry.” High, almost falsetto, harmonies set against simple lyrics and melody makes this cut a stand-out.

Brian Wilson cut two singles for Sharon Marie. She remains a mystery woman. Mike Love says she was a friend. Other people in the know say she was Ginger Blake recording under a different name so as not to conflict with her work for the Honeys. “Runaround Lover” contains some excellent and textured backing vocals and another creative use of a saxophone sound as the foundational instrument of the song. “Thinkin’ ‘Bout You Baby” uses the melody from the Beach Boys' future hit “Darlin.’ This song can be classified as a torch song and was a rarity for Brain Wilson in 1964.

Gary Usher checks in with two songs. “Sacramento” and “That’s Just The Way I Feel” are both disappointments. They feature standard vocals and little in the way of harmonies. Gary Usher was an early writing partner of Brian Wilson who would go on to produce such brilliant studio groups as the Hondells, Super Stocks, and the Knights.

The real gems were the releases of “Pamela Jean” and “After The Game” by the Survivors. The Survivors were actually the Beach Boys recording under another name. The intent was to see if they could create a hit record if no one knew them. The single tanked, which was a shame. “Pamela Jean” used the melody to “Car Crazy Cutie” and received the full Beach Boys treatment. “After The Game” was a Brian Wilson instrumental that used some odd percussion effects and looked forward to his creations later in the decade.

The final song was “Guess I’m Dumb” released by Glen Campbell in May of 1964. When Brian Wilson stopped touring with the Beach Boys, Glen Campbell joined their stage act for a short time. Glen sings this song in a Brian-like falsetto with Brian Wilson and the Honeys providing backing.

Brian Wilson was one of the most creative producers and creators of songs in the history of modern music. These 17 tracks were recorded while he was at the height of his powers. It is interesting that not one of the releases was a hit. Still they are historically important in that they give a glimpse of Brian Wilson’s genius outside of its original and usual context.

S&H in the USA is by Media Mail in a tight box.  If you would like a different service or would prefer the item be packed in a larger box with more padding, let me know BEFORE you buy and pay so I can provide a quote and an invoice that reflects the additional cost.

THIS ITEM IS FROM OUR PEDIGREE MUSIC COLLECTION; PLEASE READ MORE ABOUT IT HERE:

Great item from an amazing music collection I'm just starting to list.  Over the next few weeks you will see TONS of incredible records from this collection.  Look in my eBay store under "Pedigree Collection - Records" and prepare to be amazed!

SOME BACKGROUND ON THE COLLECTION:  This collection comes from a longtime music business professional who started his career in the 70's as a clerk at a very cool LA based record store chain that dealt in lots of import product.  By the late 70's he'd started a company that specialized in importing records from all over the world (not just the UK, as had previously been the standard).  The company handled a lot of obscure progrssive, punk and industrial releases and the gentleman in question set aside a copy of EVERYTHING they brought in.  Out of the import company grew a label (one of the most successful independent labels of all time with HUGE acts) which was eventually sold to a major label.  The owner then continued working in the Industry for the next 20+ years, acquiring a tremendous amount of product along the way. Like many avid music consumers, he didn't have time to listen to as much as he'd have liked and much of the collection is unplayed or barely played.  All items are graded visually.

He is now selling this collection through us - prepare to be amazed!

YOU CAN SEE MORE ITEMS FROM THIS COLLECTION IN OUR eBAY STORE UNDER "PEDIGREE COLLECTION"

 INFO FOR ALL BUYERS

OUR HOURS:  We usually work a normal 5 day week, Monday-Friday, 9:30 to 5:30.  If we are closed during normal business hours, you will see a notice on our listings page (usually by the listing title).  We will respond to all e-mails, but typically answers will take 24 hours to arrive.  Do not expect a response after hours or during the weekends or holidays.

SHIPPING METHODS: We use USPS for most shipments. In some cases we may use UPS instead, especially if the package is large or oversized, so don't take the shipping method listed as gospel - your purchase could be sent by either carrier, but the majority go by USPS.

SHIPPING FEES:  We try hard to only charge actual cost + a fee of no more than $2.00 to cover materials, time, & other costs associated with each sale.  On most items, we undercharge.

COMBINING SHIPPING:  We are happy to do this for all customers, unless specifically stated in the listing, or if the items cannot be shipped together (for instance it's hard to send posters and records in the same package without damaging them, you get the drift).  Please request a total through the eBay system and we will do our best to reduce shipping for multiple items. NOTE THAT COMBINING SHIPPING DOES NOT ALWAYS REDUCE S&H COSTS, BUT IT WILL NEVER INCREASE YOUR S&H COST.

WE ARE REASONABLE PEOPLE:  If there’s a problem with your purchase, please contact us and let us know.  As buyers too, we always want to provide you with a great buying experience!

OFFERS:  Unless you see the "Make Offer" button on our listings, we are not interested in offers.  If you must, please make it reasonable.  Asking for 50% off won’t work.  If you can find it for less, please, buy it there rather than haggle with us. Thank you in advance!

UNPAID WINNINGS:  There seems to be a recent epidemic of dim-witted folks who don't understand the basics of eBay.  Here we go: you buy, you pay, we ship (or you pick up in the rare case of pick-up only items), you get the merchandise.  If payment is not made in the time specified, we will issue an unpaid item notice to eBay and you'll get a strike.  The item will be re-listed and you'll be blocked from our auctions.  We have absolutely zero interest in ANY excuses.  If there is a problem with your PayPal account, don't buy until it's resolved.  If you are expecting money from somewhere else to cover your purchase, don't buy until you have that money in your account.  Your Grandmother explodes unexpectedly?  She'd want you to honor your commitments.  Don't let Grandma down!  You let your monkey play online and he bought a bunch of stuff using your account?  Tough luck!  Next time, apply the lesson you've learned: be responsible and watch your monkey.  In the meantime, it's your account & your responsibility - pay up!  NO EXCEPTIONS!!

INFO FOR US BUYERS ONLY

PAYMENT TIMELINE FOR US BUYERS: Since we only accept PayPal, there's no reason that payment can't be made at the moment of purchase. We allow a 48 hour period to make a payment from the end of the auction (or, in the case of multiple purchases, 48 hours after you get an invoice with combined shipping, if shipping can be combined).

INFO FOR FOREIGN (EX-USA) BUYERS

SHIPPING METHODS & COSTS:  Items valued at $24.99 or more must ship by Priority Mail or better.  Priority is usually faster than 1st Class and includes insurance, but it costs more - minimum cost for a one pound package to even a nearby country like Canada is $21, and it goes up from there.  EMS is faster, includes insurance and tracking, and is usually more expensive.

CANADIAN CUSTOMERS: In some cases, your shipping costs may be less than quoted here.  You can ask first, or, in the instances where they can be reduced, we will refund the difference between what you were chraged and our usual charge to Canada for the service utilized.

S&H PRICES IN THE LISTING:  International Buyers, if you are unsure, or if you'd like a quote for another service, PLEASE, contact us BEFORE YOU BUY to ask for an S&H price quote and make sure to include your country.

If you made multiple purchases that can be shipped in one package, WAIT FOR OUR INVOICE.  DO NOT pay for an item or items, arbitrarily inserting a figure for S&H.  Payment is due 48 hours AFTER we send the invoice with S&H for your country included. If you pay the US shipping cost and you live outside the USA it will not only delay the shipping of your item, but it will cost you more in the long run.  It is not our responsibility to chase after you if you make the wrong payment, so we take care of the buyers who have paid correctly first and will notify the others when we have time to get to them.

CUSTOMS VALUES & FEES: We will NOT falsify customs forms for anyone - EVER!  We buy plenty of stuff from around the world and sympathize with Customs fees, but don't ask or expect us to lie for you, it puts us at risk and we will not do it.

If you have to pay customs and / or other fees in your country, this is your responsibility - not ours.  If an item sent internationally is returned to us because the buyer refuses to accept it or pay fees imposed by your local government or delivery service, we will not refund the S&H costs if the item is returned to us.  Again, these costs are the buyer's responsibility, not the seller's.

DELIVERY TIMES:  International Deliveries face various potential roadblocks that domestic shipments do not – customs officials & inspections in particular – so we cannot guarantee that any package will arrive within a specified period of time.  Most packages do arrive within the estimates.
