Cat Number: 33-200 – please note, this catalogue number is HIGHLY significant for this record which is a very first US issue. This includes the rare song ‘Baby Don’t Scold Me’ that was dropped on the repressing that followed the hit single ‘For What It’s Worth’ which replaced it. The repressed album had the new catalogue number 33-200A which are far easier to find. US copies of this original which is also in mono and in lovely condition, are seldom seen outside the US and this is a prized and elusive album as a genuine first issue.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare as a US first issue, this was withdrawn and repressed dropping the song ‘Baby Don’t Scold Me’ and replacing it with the hit single ‘For What It’s Worth’. So an album in it’s original format that was only on sale for a very limited time, and with only moderate sales, peaking at No. 80 in the US charts, this is now elusive, especially outside the United States. Also any classic mono record that appears very little played will be rare enough anyway.

Musicians: Richie Furay - guitar, vocals; Dewey Martin - drums, vocals; Bruce Palmer - bass guitar; Stephen Stills - guitar, keyboards, vocals; Neil Young - guitar, harmonica, piano, vocals.

Brief Info: This debut album is regarded as a classic and these first mono issues are not seen at all often. Although a short-lived American band, it quickly promoted the immense talents of Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Jim Messina. They played a skillful blend of Rock and folk but friction within the members meant changing line-ups and eventually splitting. Missing from the first pressings was the million-selling song ‘For What It’s Worth’ that became a political anthem for the late 1960s. Repressed in 1967 and now including this song at the expense of ‘Baby Don’t Scold Me’ and now with the addition of an ‘A’ to the catalogue number, this is considerably easier to find. This is a very fine copy: some cover wear is almost unavoidable on the fragile US cover, but here is only modest. The record has some light surface marks or minor paper scuffs but plays very well indeed with little unwanted. All very commendable for a 46-year-old mono record and even on very revealing stereo equipment, this gives a very impressive account of itself. Not a record I have ever had before, and for sure it will not be seen often here, so a rare chance for collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD(++): this being quite critical on a US cover this great age, these are very well-known for fragility and not wearing well. A single unlaminated format with a light surface sheen. Made with very thick and more brittle card in the usual US style with the paste-on panel on the back. This has the original 33-200 Mono catalogue number and, of course, includes the correct first issue track listing. Printed and made in the US and includes it’s original promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The front is in very fine condition overall with only a little mild grubbiness on the white and any rubbing small and light. The corners have rubbed, but how many will avoid that? Just four or five light surface creases that show little and this difficult front is quite impressive given the age and format etc.

Cover Back: The back has aged more with some rubbing, mostly to the sides. Any grubbiness quite modest and light and no ring wear which is a considerable bonus.

Top Edge: The top edge has the usual manufacture crinkle and a little rubbing. The right corner has a moderate rub but the really good news is the lack of splits. Few US covers avoid edge splits but this one has, and there are NO repairs at all. So solid and straight

Bottom Edge: This also in fine condition and being white, it shows few blemishes. Again the right corner has a moderate but and again intact.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring very mild and faint. Record enters on this edge which is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine is in exceptional condition: solid, very straight with minimal compression. All text is near perfect and unworn and again, no splits, this also has the correct 33-200 catalogue number.

Corners: Any rubbing to the spine pair are only small and light. The right pair have moderate or even more rubbing. This hardly unusual on these thick brittle card sleeves. But this rubbing is only more seen viewed end-on with minimal seen viewed normally from front and back. Fine, even very fine shape (spine) is retained.

Cover Summary: A far more than highly respectable example of this genuine and rare first issue US cover. Finding one significantly better will prove very difficult indeed, this will always prove hard to find especially outside the United States. This still attractive item should please many collectors but clearly not the perfectionists.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): and only marked down a little for a small neat central bottom edge split. Most of these will be tatty and ripped to pieces on the edges by movement, this has survived in remarkable condition and has aged little. Any discolour very mild and light and barely a crease to be seen. This promotes the ATCO albums of the era and willl prove beyond to difficult to find like this again.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(-): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. This has some surface marks and mild paper scuffs – I have found American vinyl more susceptible to marks but there is nothing serious or penetrating here. Guessing the number of plays would be purely that, a guess. The labels suggest very little at all and the ‘softer’ US vinyl does mark easier. But the most important factor is the sound which is impressive overall. Visually a very fine vintage mono record that should please many collectors but again not the highly discerning.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare original plays above it’s visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A record not really made for usage on a clinical stereo deck, but even my ultra revealing LP12 (with brand new Rondo Red cartridge fitted today) made this sound very impressive indeed. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. The surface marks ignored and a very enjoyable listen with all the sharpness and clarity maintained with barely even a hint of any groovewear or degrading. A huge plus on a record this age and mode, this classic can be experienced to the near maximum. Even the run-ins are very quiet indeed, and that is a significant indicator things will be positive. Few available copies will outperform this ultimate first issue significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no ‘mono’ noises from either speaker. This has not been overplayed for sure and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. This will not be seen often.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
