Catch a Fire was the major label debut for Bob Marley and the Wailers, and it was an international success upon its release in 1973. Although Bob Marley may have been the main voice, every member of the Wailers made valuable contributions and they were never more united in their vision and sound. All the songs were originals, and the instrumentation was minimalistic in order to bring out the passionate, often politically charged lyrics. Much of the appeal of the album lies in its sincerity and sense of purpose -- these are streetwise yet disarmingly idealistic young men who look around themselves and believe they might help change the world through music. Marley sings about the current state of urban poverty ("Concrete Jungle") and connects the present to past injustices ("Slave Driver"), but he is a not a one-trick pony. He is a versatile songwriter who also excels at singing love songs such as his classic "Stir It Up." Peter Tosh sings the lead vocal on two of his own compositions -- his powerful presence and immense talent hint that he would eventually leave for his own successful solo career. More than anything else, however, this marks the emergence of Bob Marley and the international debut of reggae music. Marley would continue to achieve great critical and commercial success during the 1970s, but Catch a Fire is one of the finest reggae albums ever. This album is essential for any music collection.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY VIK IYENGAR, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ►click here  for the complete album listing).

IN OUR HUMBLE OPINION OF THIS ALBUM: THIS IS AN INCREDIBLE, UNBELIEVABLE ALBUM. NOTWITHSTANDING MARLEY'S FANTASTIC SONGWRITING AND VOCAL DELIVERY, THE ALBUM IS A PROVERBIAL “BASS-PLAYER 001” COURSE FOR ANY PROSPECTIVE BASS-PLAYER. JUST LISTENING TO BASS PLAYING AND RHYTHM SECTION INTERPLAY ON THIS ALBUM IS A JOY UNTO HIGH HEAVENS.

And, finally, if this is of any relevance (and we do not claim that it is) "Catch a Fire" is an important  entry in my personal top list. Other entries on our top-15 list (in no particular order) include Otis Redding, Love, Sam Cooke, Dexter Gordon, Can, Tim Buckley, Byrds, James Carr,  Stooges, Five Royales, Eric Dolphy,  Everly Brothers, Richard and Linda Thompson and  Muddy Waters)

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL “GIMMICK” (LIGHTER) COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE - ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The top (lid) and the bottom (tank) of the lighter cover have COMPLETELY separated and come in two separate parts, but each part is otherwise whole and complete (NO part is missing)

-        Cover has a few large and rather annoying wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Cover has some PRONOUNCED  fraying/tattering/chipping on the spine and in the rounded corners (a few tiny bits of paper are missing)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Minor greasy stain noted on the front panel (less than 1 square inch in size)

-         Cover has a partially split spine (between 1 and 2 inches  / 2.5 to 5 centimeters)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
