For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). Note: it remains unclear – as is the case with most of Dylan’s musical and business decisions – why he (or someone else at Columbia) decided to, at the very last moment, replace the faster, rowdier version of the “From the Buick Six” with the slower, more mellow version which is found on regular pressings of this album. What we do know for fact is that, at a time, Dylan was involved in a feud with Val Valentine (who produced “Like a Rolling Stone” and received a very reluctant, minor producer co-credit for the album) over Dylan’s musical direction and overall “feel” of his music. Dylan reportedly felt that Valentine was “electrifying” his music too much and making it artificially more commercial. Needless to say, Valentine would soon – during the sessions for this album, as a matter of fact – get booted and lose his position as a Dylan’s in-house producer (hey, guys – don’t mess around with Bob D !!!) . Our assumption – which we are unable to substantiate – is that this, earlier, version of “From the Buick Six” was produced by Val Valentine, and that Dylan didn’t like it, replacing it with a slower version produced by his next Columbia producer, Bob Johnston, who received a major credit as the album producer. Our personal feeling is that Val Valentine was a pure genius, that he did a phenomenal job on “Like a Rolling Stone” (I mean, for crying out loud, according to a recent poll, it is a #1 song of all time), and that Bob Dylan made a major mistake in having him sacked. But, hey – that’s only our opinion. It remains a fact that, with or without Val Valentine, Highway 61 Revisited remains one of two or three greatest Rock albums ever recorded.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)            WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)            Important disclosure: VISUALLY, THE RECORD is STRONG VERY GOOD+. HOWEVER, WE CAUTION THAT a bad groove causes the record to skip – ONLY ONCE! - on one track on side 1 (“It takes a lot to cry”). The buyer can probably correct this by using a different stylus, adjusting the proper tone arm calibration, tracking force or pressure. We stress that the rare track (“From a buick six”) AND all other tracks on the album play perfectly fine and without any disruptions.

(c)             The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+ (VG+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         The cover has a 3-inch tear (cut) along the opening; This tear was delicately repaired (taped) by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape. PLEASE NOTE that NO part of the cover is missing.

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 3.

-         Cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease) in one of the corners.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Minor water stain noted in one corner (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY); less than 1 square inch in size

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-         No split seams (yet)

-         No cut-out (drill) holes.

-         No cut-out corners

-         No saw-marks or indents

-         No writing

-         No stamps

-         No mold or mildew spots

-         No stickers or labels

-         No water damage

-         No warping

-         No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-         No bar codes

-         No RIAA stamps or stickers.
