Description
I’m going through a spouse-enforced domestic de-clutter that leaves me having to take some tough decisions about reducing the size of my old record collection. This is one of the casualties.
It’s one of those ‘rare and unusual’ Bob Dylan recordings that were issued in the very late 1960s/early 1970s. I believe I might have bought this one in San Francisco in either 1969 or 1970. Issued under the Trade Mark of Quality Great White Wonder banner, it’s the release entitled ‘GWW VD Waltz’, a 12”, 33? rpm LP pressed in blue, see-through vinyl.
Over the years there has been a multitude of copies, imitations, spurious replications and re-pressings of these very special albums, both in vinyl and on CD, but this is one of the genuine, original articles. They were very hard to come by at the time of their release. They couldn’t be advertised or sold openly, outlets were few and far between and getting hold of one required an element of detective work, the building of mutual trust and considerable negotiation. Compared with the price of a regular album at the time, these LPs cost a small fortune.
The two sides of the album are marked in the central run-off band as ‘BD 508 A’ and ‘BD 508 B’, their labels reading simply ‘1’ and ‘2’ respectively. The track lists are:-
Side 1: VD Blues; VD Waltz; VD City; VD Gunner’s Blues; Mama, You Been On My Mind; Seven Curses; Wild Mountain Thyme; East Virginia Blues.
Side 2: The Midnight Train; Clothesline Blues; I’m Not There; Odds & Ends; Get Your Rocks Off; Apple Suckling Tree; Paths Of Victory.
Wild Mountain Thyme (Side 1) was a live version taken from the Isle of Wight Festival, 1969.
The record itself is in truly excellent condition with no discernible surface blemishes. There’s a tiny spot or two of discoloration in one part of the vinyl, where a drop of black vinyl has been inadvertently allowed to enter the mix. The record came without an inner sleeve of its own, so I’ve provided it with a commercially produced one (of 1971 vintage) with an internal protective polythene layer. The top left corner of the outer sleeve has some minor scuffing but it’s otherwise in excellent condition for its age. The reverse side has what was then a ‘best guess’ track list, written in ink at the time of purchase (see photos).
