Label/Format: CBS - Early intense orange format with textured surfaces and the first 33 speed indicator. This was soon changed to the more traditional 33 1/3. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in lovely condition and bare in mind the age of this vintage mono record. Very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks. This evidence, although never conclusive, suggests this record has received only few plays.

Cat Number: 62515.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 142 grams. A very solid weight.

Rarity: The early mono copies are a little easier to find compared to the stereo, but finding them in fine condition is considerably harder. Many written-off by heavy-tracking mono record players of the time, often with chipped or worn thick stylus that shredded the delicate groove information making them now unlistenable. This one has received no such abuse and offers clean and very enjoyable sound.

<Brief Artist & Album Info: Dylans first studio album that featured an ‘electric’ backing band, a groundbreaking moment and this title (for me anyway) is one of the very best albums he ever made, it started a chain reaction of brilliance that was maintained throughout all his 60s records. Beautifully packaged in one of the greatest 60s sleeves too, this scarce, early mono copy was a pleasure to play-grade. Both cover and record only offer gentle clues to their vintage.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three large rear external flipbacks. The back panel is matt and unprotected. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and includes the original early CBS polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The laminate retains a fine shine, clarity and even freshness with minimal dulling and no lifting. Some mainly gentle surface creasing – one along the top edge and one on the spine being the most significant, but these only around moderate. A few gentle surface marks and minor friction rubs seen under angled light and the main graphic looks superb with rich vibrant colour. So just enough to remind of the considerable age, but little detracts from a fine looking front.

Cover Back: These white unprotected backs seldom fail to age to some degree, but this has little overall. A little toning on the left edge and a few light and small spots here and there. The odd very faint surface crease and any grubbiness little and light. No ring wear or impression and the three flipbacks in splendid condition. All are neat, crisp with no end burring or grubbiness, that very unusual. Of course, it has the Mono BPG 62515 number and this more than complements the attractive front.

Top Edge: Ultra smooth and unscuffed to the fingertip with no wear.

Bottom Edge: Same again, both remain reasonably straight with any bowing mild. Laminated covers this age with no lifting often bow a little due to natural shinkage.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring gentle as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: A fantastic spine that remains fully laminated. Solid, straight, clean and with minimal compression. All text is perfect and unworn and quite well centred under the totally unscuffed or aged laminate, as seen on my spine picture.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is tiny and light and all retain excellent shape with minimal tip creasing.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this classic 60’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still attractive, early ‘Day’ cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and this being critical, only marked down for natural darkening over the many years, this only quite mild too. A plain polylined inner with two pristine window circles, barely any creasing and no edge splits or repairs. This has the date code 075 (July 1965) with ‘British and Other Patent Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: with any of the few mainly light surface marks being superficial and non-sounding. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence and few vintage mono records will survive without a few gentle surface blemishes. No vintage heavyweight old stylus have damaged or impaired this quality record and the audio quality remains high. Visually an impressive record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality early mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault at all. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds registered little and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for an album of this type. With fewer louder passages for any blemishes to hide, a top pressing and more lightly played record is essential for maximum pleasure and this easily makes the grade. Few copies will outperform this one significantly I feel sure. Major sound degrading on popular mono records is common, but this has little at all and this being played on a highly revealing LP12 stereo front end for which this record was probably not really designed. Both channels are clean and sharp and devoid of any single channel mono noise or break up. Both vocals and backing crisp and precise, the odd hint of surface sound between a couple of songs but not a great deal else. So the odd polite reminder that you are actually listening to a vintage mono record now well into it’s forties. Nothing of any spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. For those who want an early mono copy of this legendary set this will take a fair degree of beating. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
