Label Conditions: Both in super condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces fine and very faint as seen under angled light. This a superb example with sound to match.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 114 grams. A quite typical weight for this late Plum Atlantic record. And crucially, a fantastic clean pressing that is extra-essential for this very delicate album.

Rarity: Scarce, hardly a major seller. This again was issued right near the very end of the red and maroon format line. Most are seen as the Kinney repressing with the orange and green labels and new Cat. number of K40251. This original also includes the prized ‘Head Hunters’ inner sleeve which most collectors will know is collectable in it’s own right.

Musicians: Robert Margouleff & Malcolm Cecil play an expanded Series III Moog Synthesiser.

Brief Info: TONTO is an acronym for ‘The Original New Timbral Orchestra’: the world’s first (and still the largest) multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesiser, designed and constructed by Malcolm Cecil. It produced a unique sound, rich and warm with a capability of producing a very deep tone and cannot be recreated on modern and far smaller synths. This was a massive unit that resembled something more often seen at a space laboratory. TONTO resided at Mutato Muzika studios in the mid-1990s, the headquarters of Mark Mothersbaugh and Devo. This was the first Tonto’s Expanding Head Band album and caused attention with it’s amazing sounds and still sounds fresh even today. This is an instrumental album with only a few ‘voice-like’ sounds – this is not Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dream, this is a little different and a record to expand the mind. A genuinely scarce Plum copy and a very clean, hardly even played one too. Get this on to a worthy system and here those amazing sounds moving the airways again soon. I feel sure this title has only had a very limited issue on CD and to be honest I have never even seen one, whether it’s still available or not on that format, I am not sure. What is certain, this copy includes the scarce Head Hunters inner sleeve in superb condition and the record pressed to classical standard with very little unwanted. With passages of very quiet sound, this is essential and this quite possibly the very best I have heard to date.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces.This being the Atlantic Plum original with the 2400 150 SUPER number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press. Includes the prized Head Hunters inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clean and still fresh with rich colour and hardly aged. Barely any rubbin and only a few fine edge creases showing little. They will rarely be seen a great deal better.

Cover Back: Similar again, the lack of ringwear a massive plus on this cover that seldom avoids it. Note the size of the Moog within the circular picture seen in close-up.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb, this has little to fault, lovely artwork on the right face as well.

Top Edges: Just rubbing to the very ends/tips. Both straight and barely worn elsewhere.

Bottom Edges: Similar with just a trace more rubbing, but still for storage edges, hardly any and exceptional really.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with hardly any wear, any thickening or burring minuscule. Record entered on the back edge, neither trimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Light rubbing to the very ends with little else. Solid, straight with very little compression, but it has a tilt from right to left. Folded square with the edges being mostly near flush and parallel. All the text matter fully present and unworn, even the folds retain nigh-on full ink cover with no scuffs.

Corners: Moderate tip rubs with the odd small tip crease, fine shape largely retained.

Cover Summary: A strong and attractive all-round example of this original, very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This often seen badly ringworn and rubbed which this one has avoided, I consider this quite unforgiving cover to be near exceptional.

The ‘Head Hunters’ – Get a Head Inner: EXCELLENT(++): and as close to Mint(–) as they are likely to get. A famous inner sleeve that was NOT included with all copies of this record, far from it in fact. This is lined and with robust flipback construction, all very neat, one or two small crinkle traces only. No tears and barely any creasing, any present are very minor mild. With a rich dark, matt finish, this can fade and age badly too, yes it can even suffer ringwear and often does. This has escaped it simply because the record was not stored inside this one for any great length of time (there lies the difference). Even the adhesive on the edges has not browned much at all, that is unusual. Any evidence of this is confined to the inside. So hardly aged and the edges unsplit with no repairs. A classic scarce inner with all the artists you would imagine included in the collage from the aforementioned labels. A select few are: Led Zeppelin; Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention; Rory Gallagher; CSN; Ritchie Havens; The Who, Melanie et al. A class item, flipback folded, getting rare in-itself and prized, especially so in such super condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a superb visual copy that is very clean with lovely shine and quite solidly pressed. A mere fraction of my full grade for a used record, any surface traces are bording on minuscule as seen under bright angled light. Most being even finer than hairlines and a copy that appears hardly even played, it should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce Plum label original plays up to, and most all even exceeds it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A very difficult recording: certainly one of the most challenging on Atlantic with some very quiet passages. The odd ultra gentle and faint surface trace is nigh-on impossible to avoid totally, but this has hardly anything, and without doubt the very least I have ever heard from this critical album. Beautifully recorded and as clean as any copy will ever be, this one is pressed to the standard the more discerning collectors will demand. Some of the grooves incredibly fine and compact, avoiding gentle surface sound in places is nigh-on impossible – even from new. Complex groove-patterns with fine and wide variation and patterns, this is minefield for a stylus to track – all indicates high-end high fidelity sound values and a hardly played, better cared-for record is crucial. Few copies are likely match, let alone outperform this original late ‘Plum’ pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this highly unique and important record. Historically relevant in the development of electonic music before the bigger and well-known acts advanced it still further. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended unless absolute silence is mandatory – and good luck with that – this is as close as it realistically gets. Indeed it could prove a major upgrade for many.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
