BOB BATES : The Rings of Paradise LP (no label [USA] RP-001) 1979.

Record is excellent with minimal light sleeve scuffs only. It's not a great pressing so there is a little noise audible at times a few isolated clicks and pops here and there, nothing too bad. It's a pretty loud record so for the most part the noise is not noticeable. Cover is also excellent.

With original inner sleeve and insert.

Original copy of this ultra-obscure sound-art/noise/drone LP, performed live by Bob and Gail Bates on their homemade instrument The Fuser. Hand-made covers, numbered edition of 150.

These two also had a track ("Force Field", also perfomed on the Fuser) on the rare Sound LP released by The Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art in 1979, but otherwise this is the only recording we are aware of by either artist.

From the liner notes:

"This album is a recording of a live performance of Bob Bates and Gail Bates given at Salmon Recital Hall, Chapman College, Orange California, on February 16, 1979 at 8:00 PM. The sound forms were created on THE FUSER, a sound producing machine invented and built by Bob Bates in 1978 for two people to play symultaneously. This performance was made possible through the efforts of Richard Turner, chairman of the Art Department at Chapman College. The original recording was made by Dr. Norman Thompson, associate professor of music at Chapman, using a Revox A-77 Mark III stereo recorder with two AKG-C-451E microphones. Further mastering was done with the help of Jim Papageorge, Soundtrax, S.D. California. Disks pressed by Award Records. Original Graphics Bob Bates."

This is truly one of the most obscure sound art/avant garde LPs -- it is not listed in Broken Music, not in the Art Metropole Discography of Recorded Works by Artists, not listed on discogs, no Popsike sales history.
