HANK MOBLEY SOUL STATION BLUE NOTE TREASURES SERIES WITH BOTH THE VINYL LP & CD IN ONE PACKAGE

Soul Station is a quartet gem from 1960, featuring a stellar rhythm section including Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Art Blakey.

If the title of "Mr. Blue Note" had been given out to a performer, tenor-saxophonist Hank Mobley would have been its recipient. Mobley's smooth tone and style defined the hard bop era. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played. During 1955-70, Blue Note's greatest years, Mobley led 25 Blue Note albums and appeared as a sideman on many others. Soul Station, a quartet gem from 1960, is unusual for Hank in that Mobley is the only horn, heading a group that includes pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Art Blakey; needless to say, a stellar rhythm section! This recording features Hank Mobley at the peak of his powers, taking lengthy solos full of passion and drive. His four originals include his most famous composition, "This I Dig Of You", which he squeezes for every ounce of its expressive power. Hank plays with heartbreaking lyricism on "If I Should Lose You". If proof were ever needed of Hank Mobley's greatness, Soul Station is perfect evidence.

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Moanin'

One of the most beloved recordings of all time, Moanin’ is one of the few albums where listeners actually remember where they were the first time they heard it. Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers had been formed in 1955 when Blakey joined forces with Horace Silver. After Silver left to form his own successful quintet, Blakey’s band struggled a bit. However this is the version of the group that made the Jazz Messengers immortal. In fact, the release of 1958’s Moanin’ is when the Jazz Messengers became a permanent jazz institution, a laboratory in swinging jazz. Shortly before this recording was made, tenor- saxophonist Benny Golson persuaded Blakey to hire three brilliant young Philadelphians (Lee Morgan, Bobby Timmons and bassist Jymie Merritt) for the band. With Golson, Timmons and Morgan contributing new songs, the Jazz Messengers quickly had a fresh repertoire, their own sound, and an infectious enthusiasm that can still be felt today. These musicians knew that they were creating some of the world’s greatest music. Moanin’ finds the band combining youthful soul with hard-swinging solos. The Jazz Messengers are simply thrilling throughout this album. They introduce the definitive gospel-drenched soul jazz tune “Moanin’,” (the solos of Morgan, Golson and Timmons would be quoted by other musicians for decades), “Along Came Betty” and “Blues March” on this remarkable album. Blakey’s drumming is explosive in the extreme, inspiring the musicians to play as if every chorus might be their last. The passion and intensity heard throughout Moanin’ makes this an all-time classic.

Due to his signing with the Impulse! label at the time, McCoy Tyner's name was left off the cover.

AllMusic describes the album as a "particularly strong and historic effort." According to All About Jazz, Page One, which introduced the Jazz standard "Blue Bossa," is still one of Henderson's "most critically acclaimed albums." The album was identified by Scott Yanow in his Allmusic essay "Hard Bop" as one of the 17 Essential Hard Bop Recordings.

Wayne Shorter Speak No Evil LP

Speak No Evil is recent Grammy winner Wayne Shorter’s sixth album. Recorded in 1964 and released on Blue Note in 1965, the album features Shorter on tenor sax with Herbie Hancock on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. Speak No Evil combines elements of hard bop and modal jazz on the album’s six tracks: “Witch Hunt,” “Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum,” “Dance Cadaverous,” “Speak No Evil,” “Infant Eyes” and “Wild Flower”.

Wayne Shorter made a major impact on the Jazz world during 1963-64. He left Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers to become a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and he recorded Night Dreamer and Juju as a leader for Blue Note. Speak No Evil is even notable than those two gems, for Shorter had developed into not only one of the most original tenor-saxophonists of the 1960s but also one of its most vital composers. With superb playing by Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and Elvin Jones, Shorter introduces six unique compositions. Hubbard and Hancock consistently raise the temperature with fiery solos. Shorter's playing and writing are both beyond description, utilizing a logic all his own which, over time, has become a major influence in Modern Jazz. Throughout Speak No Evil, Shorter creates brilliant new music like no one else.

"On his third date for Blue Note within a year, Wayne Shorter changed the bands that played on both Night Dreamer and Juju and came up with not only another winner, but also managed to give critics and jazz fans a different look at him as a saxophonist...The swing is gentle but pronounced and full of Shorter's singular lyricism as a saxophonist as well as a composer." -Thom Jurek, allmusic.
