This is the LP they all want. I’m not suprised, it’s possibly the best vocal jazz album ever issued in the UK. And it was only issued in the UK. The LP is by Blossom Dearie and is called “That’s Just The Way I Want To Be”. Fontana 6309015. Most people want this LP because of the funky and club monster “I Like London in the rain” track with all its fat beats, breaks and clean, heavy drops, but I have to say every track on this LP is blinding. It includes a little scat, sadness, lots of groovyness, love. there are whistful moments and the arrangements and playing throughout this LP are quite sublime, British jazz of the highest quality, amazing arrangements and an overall feeling of subtle swing with a touch of experimentation. As well as Blossom on vocals we have the cream of British Jazz backing her up: Ian Carr (Flugelhorn), Jeff Clyne (Bass), Harold McNair (Flute and tenor sax), Daryl Runswick (Bass), Spike Wells (Drums), Kenny Wheeler (trumpet) with the occassional backing vocal by The Ladybirds. Full track listing runs as follows: That’s Just The Way I want it to be, Long Daddy Green, Sweet Suprise, Hey John, Sweet Georgie Fame, Both Sides Now, Dusty Springfield, Will There Really Be a Morning, I know The Moon, Inside a Silent Tear, Yesterday When I was Young, I Like London In The Rain. I cannot enthuse about this LP enough. I have had three copies in the last ten years and always there is a big fight to get it. As for condition, I have had the LP professionally cleaned. The sleeve is very near mint, with just a 2mm rub on ther bootom right. As for the vinyl, I’d say EX-. There are a few light surface marks and a little background noise noticeable in quieter moments (and between tracks) if you turn it right up but I have listened to this LP about 11 times already today and the occassional pop is not really a problem to me. You may feel differently about this. It is obviously a well played and enjoyed album, but very well respected. You know how hard to find this LP is, and you may not find a better copy.
