Label Conditions: Both practically as made with hardly a spindle trace to be seen. Some adhesion crinkle on side two that is hardly unusual on records made the in the 1970s.

Cat Number: 9119 001 [de luxe].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 137 grams. This being somewhat above average for this album. This often very flimsy and light. A top quality pressing with sound to match.

Rarity: Moderate but finding the early pressings in this type of condition is way harder, this is a superb copy, hardly even played and a magnificent pressing that really hits the spot for sound. It includes the short hidden track known as ‘Blow on a Jug’ at the end of ‘The Writ’, this is uncredited on the actual album. This light-hearted lark-around was recorded at very low volume, it contains Ozzy and Bill Ward messing around in the studio and was later omitted.

Brief Info: Album number six and another classic within the dark heavy rock genre – Black Sabbath for me still the undisputed kings of real heavy metal. Although not universally loved at first by some fans, many thought it slightly overproduced, it did indeed take far longer to mix in the studio than their previous records. Time finds most opinion the same now and this was arguably their last true classic although subsequent albums certainly had their moments, but band problems and squabbles were fast coming to a head. This awesome piece of rock again progresses their sound further with use of keyboards, even the Mellotron is featured as is a choir and tape effects. Sabotage includes for me, quite possibly, their greatest ever track in ‘Sympton of the Universe’, with one of the most powerful rock riffs ever recorded – this still rings in my subconscious after seeing them perform live at Hammersmith Odeon towards the end of the 1970s – what a night that was with the most awesome sound you could ever imagine, I can still see those stacked column of Marshall’s now. An album to be played loud for full impact. No other metal act were like the vintage Sabbs and all their first six albums are essential. This would not be the rarest album I have ever offered but one of the best examples for sound. Heavier pressed with two //1 matrixes. Most I have seen and had have been //1 and //2 and few have sounded this clean and detailed. More often seen in poor, worn conditions, the cover being thin and flimsy, it is very prone to wear and seldom seen with little. Often the thinner pressed later copies crackle and do not do this impressive album justice. For those who want a very fine all-round copy that plays beautifully – look no further – Oh Lord Yeah!

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single, unlaminated format that has a lovely textured finish that has an almost ‘leatherlike’ feel with soft card – clearly very wear-prone. This was printed and made in England by Robert Stace. The Polydor style inner is also included.

Cover Front: Clean, fresh and attractive, a little light rim rubbing near the right edge and a faint trace near the top. Several fine spine edge creases but none long. The main graphic of the band looks superb. So a little gentle wear, but little spoils it’s attractiveness which remains high.

Cover Back: The back is even better with minimal traces of rubbing and fewer spine edge creases.

Top & Bottom Edges: The top edge is nigh-on perfect and very straight as well. The bottom has light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with little wear, any thickening of burr being very small and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this guaranteed untrimmed edge.

Spine and Text: Quite solid with a small few central hairline creases. It remains straight with a little compression at the bottom and odd trace elsewhere, but the shape overall remains fine as seen on the picture. All text is present and just centred a fraction low in manufacture. More unusually on this cover, the folds retain practically all ink.

Corners: A little rubbing on the bottom right tip, little else. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile mid-1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find significantly better. A little gentle wear and fine creasing, but this is quite an uncompromising cover that seldom fairs well over time, this one should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a Polydor inner sleeve that has aged little. Two neat untorn window circles and the lining intact. One corner crease and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and little short of my maximum grading of Mint(-). Evidence strongly suggests hardly even played reitterated by fantastic looks and sound. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny and very solidly pressed. Barely a noteworthy mark or blemish to be see, any traces under bright light ultra fine and whispy and visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: One for the Black Sabbath vinyl connoisseur. This lovely early NEMS record plays even above its high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. This has strong, distortion-free sound, with all frequencies sharp and clear. Sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and highly impressive sound. A brilliant production with bags of detail and immense power. That foundation-shaking riff on ‘Symptom of the Universe’ is breathtaking and demands to be played at maximum volume with pre-warmed up amps to raise the rafters. Watch those bass drivers lurch to reproduce these powerful bass-chords – metal rarely gets better than this. Even though predominately a heavy record, this does have some quieter, more subtle moments and any surface sounds are minimal – overall, an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match or outperform this lovely example significantly I feel sure, this is so hard to find in nigh-on unplayed condition. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this blistering real metal album. I also remind, this includes that short prank song at the end that is recorded very low as the record fades out. When it comes to heavy metal, nobody did or does it better than these four guys. This record will prove very difficult to find better and is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
