BLACK SABBATH 1ST PRESS UK VERTIGO SWIRL PHILIPS RECORD

BLACK SABBATH
Black Sabbath

VO6 847903 VTY
1970 VERTIGO SWIRL - UK ISSUE! - VERY, VERY 1ST PRESS - "A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT" ON LABEL
GOOD UNLAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE - CORRECT 1ST PRESS SLEEVE - BAND NAMES IN CAPITAL LETTERS, "COPYRIGHT SUBSISTS IN ALL STEREO RECORDINGS..." ETC
EXCELLENT VISUAL VINYL - FULLY PLAY GRADED RIGHT THE WAY THROUGH - NO POPS, JUMPS OR STICKS

FIRSTLY: I ALWAYS, ALWAYS LISTEN TO AND AUDIO GRADE EVERY ALBUM/SINGLE/EP. Visual gradings are ok, but can be very misleading in my experience! I've had mint-looking vinyl sound like a dog! And, reasonably scratched vinyl sound great! So it's got to be listened to to give an honest and accurate appraisal. And that's what you always get from me.

Also, I list every item with LOADS of pictures detailing everything about this item. I hide nothing in my listings and point out all visible/audible flaws (if any!), as well as the good bits! That way you can rest assured you get exactly what is described. Every vinyl is thoroughly cleaned and listened to from start to finish, right the way through! So there's no unexpected disappointments when you receive your vinyl.

OUTER SLEEVE:
The correct very 1st issue sleeve. Do not be misled by "lyrics on cross" or "black gatefold inner" or "Ossie mis-spelling" as sources for identifying a 1st issue sleeve, ALL pressings and re-issues of this album have these characteristics - right through to the NEMS reissue in 1976 which finally changed the inner gatefold to white.

There are 3 Vertigo swirl issues, one Vertigo spaceship issue, one WWA issue all with the above inner sleeve.

THE ONLY WAY TO IDENTIFY A VERY 1ST PRESS SLEEVE IS THE FOLLOWING:

1. Band member names and instruments played, production credit, engineer credit and album design and photography ARE ALL IN CAPITALS! All subsequent issues and reissues are in Lower Case with Initial Capitals. 2nd press sleeves onwards also include publishing credits and songwriting credits - 1st press do not.

2. At the bottom of the cross is a copyright warning notice - very 1st press sleeves have a printing error which states: "WARNING - Copyright subsists in all Stereo recordings...etc"

subsequent issues and reissues have this corrected to: 'WARNING - Copyright subsists in all Vertigo recordings..."

Condition of the sleeve is good, there is wear to spine (not too bad) and wear to edges (some splitting to bottom seam). No graffiti or creases or bends.

LABELS:
Original 1st press UK VERTIGO labels with the larger swirl logo on the A side and the correct label layout on the B side for a 1st press. Very little spindle wear and a few light 'spidery' traces. Fortunately no writing or graffiti or damage at all to the labels. Very nice indeed. EX+

Again, there is only one 1st press and the ONLY way to spot it is with 'A PHILIPS RECORD PRODUCT' below the VERTIGO on the B side label. Without this wording, the label is a 2nd press. And if VERTIGO is above the spindle it is a 3rd press - and ignore Mr "IMPOSSIBLE LIKE THIS!!!" - there is no such thing as identifying the 3rd press as 'the standard 1st press"...

MATRIX:
1st press UK matrices

VO6 1Y*1 420  1 2 3
VO6 2Y*1 420  1 2 1 2

and yes you will find 2nd press vinyl with the above matrix...Black Sabbath were still relatively unknown when they released their debut. It did not sell that well. They hit No.1 in the charts with their second LP, Paranoid. With this success Vertigo reissued the debut LP and since the stampers and masters had hardly been used they were re-used...

VINYL:
Looks excellent, still glossy and shiny with only a few faint hairlines scratches visible, very superficial, nothing at all serious. Very hard to find one in this good a condition! EX+

AUDIO:
Plays superbly throughout with lovely tone and volume. You really can't beat these early Vertigos for sound quality and thanks to the quality of the pressings, they are very robust too. This one has faint background crackle in the run ins and in between tracks and slightly audible in the quietest sections. The louder parts completely drown this out. Very nice example and hard to beat! EX

INNER SLEEVE:
Original Vertigo swirl inner sleeve that has some writing on one side  - see pics.

SUMMARY:
A very nice example of the RAREST Black Sabbath debut on Vertigo Swirl...many more copies exist of the 2nd and 3rd pressings due to their increased popularity after PARANOID went to No.1 in the UK charts. Grab this one while you can!
