Dark and mysterious. These are probably the best words to describe the music on Intents & Purposes from trumpet player and composer Bill Dixon. Unlike the manic frenzy that’s often found in free jazz of the same period, this album is more solemn. There are, of course, bursts of energy from the soloists but they are subjected to the global texture of the music. Intents & Purposes is clearly an ensemble project and not a soloist one. The sound balance, the orchestration and the arrangements are more important than individual prowess that is only used to spice the whole, in a way similar to what Mingus did with his bands. Only 32 minutes of music, cut in four pieces. Two are over 10 minutes long and feature up to ten musicians (Metamorphosis 1962-1966 and Voices). On these longer tracks, Dixon shows us he isn’t afraid of low notes or rubato and has the brilliant idea to juxtapose slow gliding harmonies to ebullient percussions, a contrast that works really well. The two other pieces are quite short trumpet/flute duets that confirm the gloomy nature of this impressive record.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)         WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)         The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)         The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)         The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)         Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-       Cover has TWO (2) cutout hole in one of the corners

-       Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-       Cover has a tape residue (yellowish discoloration from the removed piece of old and aged scotch tape)   (less than 1 square inch in size)

-       Cover has some writing on its back side (initials of the previous owner written in blue ballpoint pen, about ½ x ¼ inches in size) and a microscopic price code written in one corner

-       Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging (BARELY VISIBLE)

-       Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-       Cover has a partially split spine (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-       Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine
