BENNY GOLSON Turning Point RARE DG 1963 LP Plays NM-
Great Bebop/Hard Bop tenor sax Benny Golson is showcased by Wynton Kelly, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; and Jimmy Cobb, drums.
Benny Golson played in bands for (among others) Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey. As a composer, he created Killer Joe, I Remember Clifford, Along Came Betty, Stablemates Whisper Not, Blues March, Five Spot After Dark, Are you Real?
He arranged for Basie, Mile, Dizzy, Ella, Coltrane, Itzhak Perlman and The Monkees?! And he wrote scores for M*A*S*H, Mannix, Mission Impossible, Mod Squad, and so on and on and on. How he found time to record this album is beyond me, but I’m glad he did.
On this album Golson, who likes to play tunes by other composers too, contributed only two compositions, Turning Point and Dear Kathy. The other songs are: How Am I to Know (Park & King), The Masquerade Is Over (Magidson & Wrubel), Three Little Words (Ruby & Kalmar), Stella By Starlight (Young & Washington), and Alone Together (Dietz & Schwartz).
This monophonic recording session was released on Mercury Record MG 20801 in 1963. The label is black with silver printing. This is a DEEP GROOVE recording.
I play-graded this album NM-. The mono sound is excellent throughout and there is no noticeable trace of surface noise.

Visually, under bright light, the vinyl still has a good shine, and I picked out some very faint hairline scratches, but nothing significant. I graded it VG++ to NM-
The cover graphic, a pencil sketch of Golson, looks good. The white background has some faint age shadows, with a faint line on the top. There are dings on all four corners. There is wear on the bottom edge. The back cover looks good, but again, there are faint age shadows. I would grade it VG+ to VG++.
The inner sleeve, which features an advertisement for a “Fully Transistorized Portable Mercury Phonograph,” is original and in good condition.
