STEREO RELEASE FROM 1963 ON PARLOPHONE - CATALOGUE No. PCS 3042
ULTRA RARE THIRD LABEL VARIATION - ESPECIALLY IN STEREO
Side 1 matrix YEX 94-1, stamp code 1 P, Raised tax code M above spindle hole.
Side 2 marix YEX 95-1, stamp code 1 G
This release has been well documented and was listed in the December 2010 issue of Record Collector magazine (issue 382) as the twelfth rarest UK collectable record with a mint value of £3,000 although that may well be an underestimate. After the initial pressing of the album the label was changed from the original highly sought after black/gold to the more common yellow/black. However, a mistake was made in keeping the small 33 1/3 print on the label as well as the larger one further above. This was quickly spotted and the 33 1/3 was replaced with the year of release on subsequent issues. It's believed that this pressing was from the first few weeks of it's initial release and although the variation is minor it forms an essential part of the history of The Beatles' early recordings.
The whole package is 'farm-fresh' having had one previous owner from new. It has been played, enjoyed and reasonably well looked after. I have played it on a Garrard 401 turntable and it sounds nice and crisp with very basic stereo seperation. A visual inspection would grade the disc as good. There are a number of surface marks and four deeper ones so there is some crackling between tracks and the odd pop. Unfortunately there is one jump during George's guitar break on 'I Saw Her Standing There'. Because of where it is it's barely noticable (I had to double check) but it's still a jump. I've probably made it sound worse than it is - it's not a 'skating-rink', it's old heavy vinyl that still looks good and sounds great.
The front laminated Ernest J. Day original sleeve is in lovely condition as you can see in the pictures. There's some minor creasing on a couple of parts of the laminate but none on the back. There's no writing, sticker marks or tears, only a couple of small brown stains on the back (see picture). The spine is excellent with unblemished clear bold text. The 'emitex' poly-lined inner sleeve is the original and has not been replaced as it's still in excellent condition.
