After running away with a traveling circus at only 17 years of age, Anne Briggs was discovered by Topic recordings after their boss heard one of her incredible acapella performances at the show she worked with. Before long she became and integral part of the mid 1960's British folk revival and ended up recording for CBS, but this loving re-issue compiles the best of her early work (an EP, a full album and compilation appearances), while she was still fresh and without cynicism. Most of her tracks featured here are sung without any accompaniment, which at first can sound jarring yet after a few haunting minutes you realise the power of her quite gorgeous voice. This music is about the voice and even the small handful of tracks with accompaniment seem unimportant once you have grown accustomed to her amazing voice. Bo Weavil are on a roll at the moment with these gorgeously packaged and pressed vinyl re-releases and as usual this one is hideously limited to only 500 copies for the world, so buy quickly to avoid disappointment.
