It's all about those warm, fat, punchy analogue synth tones on this dark disco corker of a third studio album from Los Angeles three-piece Automatic. 'Mercury' plays on the journey through the solar system feel, with the dreamy, spectral and languid vocal style. Meanwhile, the drums switch between being proletariat and having a busy tropical feel where you can't help but surrender to the groove. The title track is a propulsive Krautrock inspired number with some stunning early New Order-esque synth and bass parts mixed in with the playfulness of Manchester's We Have Band. Automatic's reference points are likely helped by the fact Lola Dompe (drums, vocals) is one of Bauhaus drummer Kevin Haskins' daughters. Great music taste clearly running through the family.
